Chapter 5 - The Red Dress and the Monster

While Elias and Clara plotted their counter-offensive, the Whitmore mansion was descending into madness.

The public humiliation at the gala had shattered Victoria's carefully constructed image. Rumors were swirling among the elite. Investors were getting nervous. And Charles was taking his anger out on everyone. But no one was unraveling faster than Victoria.

Inside the mansion’s west wing, chaos had erupted. A young maid named Maria, who had once secretly sneaked extra food to Clara, was packing her bags, desperate to flee before the family’s paranoia turned on the staff. She had her baby, a six-month-old boy, resting on a blanket on the floor while she hurriedly shoved clothes into a duffel bag.

Suddenly, the door slammed open.

Victoria stood in the doorway, wearing a stunning, blood-red evening gown left over from a photoshoot earlier that day. But her face was distorted with manic fury. Behind her stood Charles's new head of security, a sleazy man in a cheap suit carrying a briefcase, looking deeply uncomfortable.

"Going somewhere, Maria?" Victoria hissed, stepping into the room. In her hand, she held a heavy wooden baseball bat, a terrifying contrast to her glamorous dress.

Maria screamed, dropping her clothes and instinctively falling to her knees, placing herself between Victoria and her baby. "Please, Miss Victoria! I don't know anything! I just want to leave!"

"You helped her!" Victoria screamed, her voice shrill and unhinged. She swung the bat, smashing a bedside lamp into a million pieces. The baby began to cry loudly. "You whispered to that little rat! You told her things! Where is she?!"

"I swear, I don't know!" Maria sobbed, hands covering her ears.

Victoria stepped closer, looming over the terrified maid and the crying infant. The man in the suit took a nervous step back. "Miss Whitmore, maybe we shouldn't—"

"Shut up!" Victoria snapped. She looked down at the baby, a sick, twisted smile forming on her lips. She tapped the end of the bat lightly against the floor near the child's head. "People who betray this family need to learn there are consequences. If you don't tell me where Clara is, Maria, I might just lose my grip on this heavy piece of wood."

It was a scene of pure, unadulterated evil. The glittering heir in red, threatening an innocent child to punish a maid.

But Victoria’s reign of terror was suddenly interrupted by a phone ringing in the security chief’s hand. He answered it, his face going pale.

"What is it?!" Victoria demanded.

"It's... it's the corporate office, ma'am," he stammered. "Someone just bypassed our secure servers. They are downloading the private financial ledgers, the offshore accounts, the emails... everything."

Victoria dropped the bat, her manic rage instantly replaced by cold panic. "Who?"

The man swallowed hard. "The login signature belongs to Elias Cain. He left a message on the mainframe. It just says: 'Checkmate.'"
