Chapter 10 - The Trap Is Sprung

Mercer sneered, leaning over the edge of Michael's hospital bed. "Even if this kid overheard something in a park, it's his word against mine in court, Michael. A twelve-year-old child isn't going to stand up against a senior partner in front of a grand jury. You have no hard physical evidence."

"We didn't yesterday," Dana Brooks spoke up from the doorway, stepping forward with an iPad. "But two hours ago, FBI forensics searched the master suite on the yacht. They found the 9mm pistol inside the air vent. It was wrapped in a silk scarf containing Julianna's hair and DNA. And guess whose name is listed on the illegal offshore purchase invoice we recovered ten minutes ago?"

Mercer's face turned ash grey. "You're bluffing."

"Furthermore," Dana continued, "federal agents executed a search warrant on your private server one hour ago. They recovered deleted emails between you and Julianna containing tide charts, speed calculations for the Titan's Horizon, and a wire transfer agreement for ten million dollars from a bank in the Cayman Islands."

Mercer took a step back toward the door, but two heavy-set FBI agents moved into the entrance behind him, handcuffs already unclipped.

"Daniel Mercer," the lead agent announced, "you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, and corporate fraud."

Mercer looked at Michael, then at Mateo, his jaw hanging open as the steel cuffs clicked around his wrists. As the agents dragged the attorney down the hallway, Michael let out a long breath and looked at Mateo. "You really are something special, kid."
