Chapter 2 - Beneath the Golden Waves

The impact with the ocean surface hit Michael like a wall of solid concrete. The icy Pacific water drove the air out of his lungs in a violent cloud of silver bubbles as the blue expanse swallowed him whole. Pain shot through his chest and right knee, blinding him with instant agony as the joint twisted violently under the surface pressure.
Above him, the colossal dark shadow of the mega-yacht passed overhead, its massive twin propellers thrumming like subterranean thunder, threatening to draw him into their deadly vortex. Disoriented in the churning blue depths, Michael clawed his way toward the flickering golden light far above. His lungs burned, screaming for oxygen as saltwater filled his nostrils.
When his head finally broke the surface, he gasped violently, coughing up sea spray and fighting to keep his mouth above the swelling waves. "Help!" Michael yelled, but his voice was instantly swallowed by the roaring engine noise and the rising wind.
The Titan's Horizon was already accelerating away, a towering floating palace of light leaving him far behind in its expanding white wake. High up on the private stern balcony, he could barely discern the small, motionless silhouette of Julianna standing against the setting sun, watching him drown. She didn't throw a life buoy. She didn't shout for help. After a few seconds, she turned and casually walked back inside.
Michael tried to kick his legs, but a sharp, excruciating shock flared through his right knee. His navy blazer felt like soaked lead, heavy and dragged down by the Atlantic current. Another wave broke directly over his head, pushing him under once more. He thrashed frantically with his arms, kicking with his left leg, fighting against the icy hand of the ocean pulling him down into the cold darkness.
Meanwhile, on the small wooden fishing boat named The Sea Star, Rafael Cruz slammed the dual throttles forward. The old diesel engine roared to life with a deep mechanical groan, sending thick black smoke belching into the dusk sky as the vessel surged across the water.
"Keep your eyes on the wake, Mateo!" Rafael shouted over the deafening engine roar, spinning the wooden helm to adjust their intercept course. "Don't lose him in the swells!"

Mateo stood at the bow, holding onto the aluminum handrail with one hand while keeping his binoculars glued to his eyes with the other. "I see him! Dad, two o'clock! He's floating near the foam line! Hurry!"
Mounted on the aluminum roof of the small wheelhouse, an automated marine navigation camera hummed quietly. Installed years ago for basic insurance purposes, its high-definition digital lens remained locked on the distant mega-yacht, capturing the entire falling sequence, the pistol, and the ongoing rescue in undeniable, frame-by-frame clarity.
