Chapter 14 - The Zurich Letter

The afternoon breeze rustled through the garden trees as I stared down at the handwritten letter resting on the silver security tray. Adrian stood directly beside me, his eyes scanning the lines of cursive ink over my shoulder, while Mason Reed waited silently nearby.
The letter was written in elegant, precise handwriting, dated just three days prior from a private Swiss banking institution in Zurich:
*'Dear Chloe Mercer-Vale,*,
*If you are reading this letter, it means my former business associate, Ronald Mercer, has finally fallen, and the offshore accounts he utilized have been seized by federal authorities. My name is Julian Vance—no relation to your local prosecutor—and I was the primary director of Mercer’s international wealth-sheltering portfolio in Zurich.*,
*For over a decade, Ronald painted himself as a successful domestic consultant. However, the funds he stole from your late grandmother Clara’s trust were merely a drop in the ocean compared to the true source of his wealth. Ronald was laundering capital for an international syndicate of corrupt European financiers and disgraced corporate raiders.*,
*Enclosed is a photograph taken in Geneva in 2017. It depicts Ronald meeting with a man you know very well—Richard Sterling—and a third individual whose identity was classified under strict Swiss secrecy laws until last week. If you wish to know the full truth about how your family’s fortune was originally built, and why your grandmother Clara died under such sudden, suspicious circumstances, meet me at the Grand Continental Hotel in Geneva next Tuesday. Come alone.*,
*Sincerely, Julian Vance.'*
My hands shook uncontrollably as I let the letter flutter down onto the silver tray. I picked up the enclosed photograph. It showed my father, Ronald Mercer, smiling warmly while shaking hands with Richard Sterling outside an upscale Swiss bank. Standing directly between them, half-turned away from the camera in a dark trench coat, was a third man whose silver hair and distinctive posture made my blood run instantly cold.
'My uncle... Uncle Robert?' I whispered in sheer disbelief, staring at the photo as the room seemed to spin around me. 'That’s my father’s estranged older brother Robert Mercer... the man who supposedly died in a private yacht accident in the Mediterranean twenty years ago!'
Adrian grabbed the photograph from my hands, his eyes narrowing as he scrutinized the third man’s face. 'Robert Mercer didn't die in a yacht accident,' Adrian said grimly, his voice dropping an octave into dangerous territory. 'His death was staged. He faked his own death, transferred his entire share of the Mercer family estate into Ronald’s control, and fled to Europe to run an international money-laundering syndicate.'
Mason stepped forward, pulling out his tablet to run a rapid background query against international Interpol databases. 'If Julian Vance’s letter is legitimate, this goes far beyond domestic grand larceny and corporate espionage,' Mason said, his face pale. 'We’re looking at international organized crime, multi-billion-dollar asset concealment, and potentially... premeditated homicide regarding your grandmother Clara’s estate.'
I looked up at Adrian, my heart hammering violently against my ribs. The realization hit me with terrifying clarity: Ronald Mercer wasn't just a corrupt, abusive father who stole my trust fund and beat me for a Cadillac Escalade. He was a low-level pawn in a massive, international criminal conspiracy orchestrated by his own brother—and Clara had discovered the truth right before she died.
'Grandma Clara didn't die of natural causes,' I whispered, tears streaming down my cheeks as the final pieces of the horrific puzzle locked into place. 'Ronald and Robert murdered her because she found their offshore accounts and threatened to disinherit them both.'
Adrian pulled me into his arms, holding me tightly against his chest with fierce, unyielding strength. 'We are going to Geneva, Mason,' Adrian announced coldly, looking up at his general counsel with absolute resolve. 'Book the private Gulfstream immediately. We’re flying out tonight.'
'Adrian, the letter said *come alone*,' I reminded him urgently, pulling back to look into his eyes. 'If Julian Vance is setting a trap—'
May you like
'Let him try,' Adrian interrupted, his voice laced with absolute, terrifying authority. 'Nobody threatens my wife, and nobody hides the truth about your grandmother. We go together. And we bring a full federal security detail with us.'
Little did we know, as our private jet soared across the Atlantic toward the snowy peaks of the Swiss Alps, Julian Vance was already waiting at the Grand Continental Hotel—and someone else had intercepted his message, watching our every move from the shadows.
