Chapter 9 - The Drainage Culvert Escape

The heavy iron service hatch banged open against the concrete wall as Adrian shoved me through into the pitch-black, narrow drainage corridor behind the warehouse. The air inside the underground culvert was thick, damp, and smelled strongly of stagnant rainwater and rust, but to us, it smelled like pure survival.
Behind us, the muffled sounds of automatic gunfire and shouts echoed faintly from the main warehouse floor as Mason and our security team kept Sterling’s mercenaries pinned down.
'Keep moving, Chloe! Don't look back!' Adrian urged urgently, sweeping his tactical flashlight beam across the slick concrete floor of the tunnel as we waded through ankle-deep runoff water.
We scrambled through the winding underground conduit for what felt like an eternity, our breathing coming in ragged, desperate gasps. My chest burned, and my recently repaired nasal passages throbbed with sharp pain from the damp, freezing air, but I forced my legs to keep moving. I clutched the waterproof leather dossier containing Grandmother Clara’s forged will and the financial audit tightly against my chest with both arms.
Suddenly, the narrow tunnel opened up into a larger concrete retention basin where the drainage culvert emptied directly out into the churning, dark waters of the bay. Heavy rain continued to pour down from the open sky above, soaking us to the bone in seconds.
'We're out,' Adrian panted, pulling me into the protective shadow of a massive concrete pier piling. He pulled out his encrypted satellite communicator, tapping the screen rapidly. 'Mason, status report. Do you copy?'
For several agonizing seconds, there was only static over the comms earpiece. Then Mason’s voice came through, heavy with exertion and static. *'We're breaking contact now, boss! We've secured the perimeter sensors and disabled their transport vehicles. We're RV-ing at the secondary extraction point in three minutes.'*
'Understood. Move fast,' Adrian ordered, clicking off the radio. He turned to me, his hands gently gripping my shoulders, his eyes searching my face with intense concern. 'Are you okay, Chloe? Did you take any shrapnel?'
'I'm fine, Adrian. Just soaked and freezing,' I whispered, offering a small, reassuring smile despite my swollen, bruised face. I held up the leather dossier. 'And we have the proof. Sterling can burn the warehouse down all he wants; the original documents and forensic copies are right here.'
Before Adrian could reply, the harsh beam of a high-intensity marine spotlight cut through the heavy rain from out on the open water. A sleek, black high-speed rigid-hull inflatable boat (RHIB) surged out from around the corner of the pier piling, cutting across the choppy bay waves directly toward our position.
Standing at the bow of the boat, gripping a railing with one hand and holding an assault rifle in the other, was Richard Sterling. His face was twisted in a mask of furious, unhinged rage.
'You think you can escape me that easily?' Sterling roared over the roar of the boat's powerful twin outboard engines. 'Give me the dossier, Chloe, or I will drop both of you into the bay right now!'
Adrian instantly stepped in front of me, raising his sidearm, but before he could fire, the heavy roar of a second engine drowned out Sterling’s threats.
From around the opposite side of the pier, a massive, armored Vale Corporate Security helicopter descended out of the low cloud cover, its powerful searchlights instantly blinding Sterling and his boat crew. The deafening rotor wash kicked up massive walls of spray and white foam across the water.
Over the helicopter’s external loudspeaker, Captain Vance’s voice boomed authoritatively across the bay. *'Richard Sterling! Cut your engines and put your hands on your head! You are surrounded by federal and local law enforcement!'*
Sterling cursed loudly, realizing his trap had completely backfired. He tried to swing his rifle toward the helicopter, but a sharp crack of sniper fire from the chopper's door-gunner cleanly shot the weapon right out of his hands, sending it splashing into the dark ocean.
Within seconds, two tactical police boats converged on Sterling’s vessel from both sides, boarding the craft with drawn weapons and slamming handcuffs securely onto Sterling’s wrists.
As Richard Sterling was forced down onto his knees on the deck of his own boat, screaming obscenities into the pouring rain, Adrian wrapped his arm tightly around my waist, pulling me close against his chest.

'It's over, Chloe,' Adrian whispered softly into my wet hair, his voice thick with emotion. 'They're all going down.'
I closed my eyes, pressing my face against his shoulder, knowing at last that the nightmare was truly finished. Or so we thought, completely unaware that back in the city, Helen Mercer had just made a desperate final phone call that would trigger an entirely new, deeply personal crisis.
