Chapter 15 - The Geneva Rendezvous

The snow fell in thick, silent flakes over the glittering streets of Geneva, casting a soft white blanket across the historic Swiss architecture surrounding Lake Geneva. The Grand Continental Hotel stood like a fortress of timeless luxury, its opulent crystal chandeliers glowing warmly through towering arched glass windows.
Our private black Mercedes limousine pulled up silently beneath the grand portico of the hotel. Adrian stepped out first, scanning the snowy perimeter with the sharp vigilance of a trained tactician, before offering his hand to help me out. We were flanked by two of our elite corporate security operatives in plainclothes, while Mason Reed remained stationed at our secure temporary command post suite two blocks away.
We walked through the revolving brass doors into the magnificent marble lobby. The air smelled of expensive cedarwood, fresh white lilies, and roasted espresso. According to Julian Vance’s instructions, we headed directly toward the secluded winter garden lounge located at the rear of the hotel, past towering marble pillars and velvet-upholstered seating areas.
The winter garden was quiet, filled with towering potted palm trees and glass ceiling panels that looked out onto the softly falling snow. Sitting alone at a secluded corner table near a stone fireplace was an elderly man wearing a tailored charcoal tweed suit, nursing a cup of black tea. He had thinning silver hair, sharp wire-rimmed glasses, and an air of profound, nervous exhaustion.
As we approached his table, the man looked up, his eyes darting anxiously around the lounge before locking onto my face. He stood up slowly, steadying himself on the edge of the table.
'You came,' Julian Vance said, his voice carrying a distinct British accent with a slight tremor. 'And you brought Mr. Vale. And security. Wise choice.'
Adrian pulled out a chair for me before taking a seat directly across from Vance, keeping his hand resting casually near his jacket pocket where his sidearm was holstered. I sat down, sliding the photograph across the marble table between us.
'Cut to the chase, Mr. Vance,' I said, my voice steady and ice-cold. 'Who is the third man in this photograph? And what does he have to do with my grandmother Clara’s death?'
Vance swallowed hard, sinking back down into his velvet armchair. He reached into his tweed jacket pocket and pulled out a heavy, leather-bound ledger, sliding it across the table toward us.
'The third man in that photograph is Robert Mercer—your father’s older brother, legally declared dead in 2004,' Vance whispered, glancing nervously over his shoulder. 'Except Robert never died. He staged his own death after embezzling forty million dollars from Swiss private banks, fleeing to Zurich under an assumed identity. Ronald was his primary domestic proxy, laundering Robert’s illicit capital through real estate shell companies and trust funds across the United States.'
I opened the heavy ledger. Inside were thousands of pages of wire transfers, offshore account numbers, and corporate signatures—including my grandmother Clara’s authentic signature on documents she had never authorized.
'And my grandmother?' I demanded, my voice cracking slightly with emotion. 'Did Robert and Ronald kill her?'
Vance’s expression darkened into deep sorrow and guilt. 'She didn't die of a heart attack, Miss Mercer. I was there. In 2018, Clara discovered that Ronald was systematically draining her personal estate to fund Robert’s offshore syndicate. She threatened to go to the FBI and disinherit Ronald permanently. Two days later, she suffered a sudden, fatal medical emergency while alone with Ronald in her study. An autopsy was never performed because Ronald had already bribed the attending physician.'
The air in the winter garden seemed to freeze solid. I stared at the ledger, the final, horrifying truth washing over me like a tidal wave of ice. My father hadn't just beaten me, stolen my inheritance, and worked with Richard Sterling—he was a murderer who had killed the only person in the world who truly loved me.
Before Adrian could speak, a sharp, metallic click echoed from directly behind our table.
We whipped around. Standing twenty feet away near the potted palms, holding a suppressed automatic pistol aimed squarely at Julian Vance’s chest, was a tall man in a dark trench coat.
'You talk too much, Julian,' a cold, familiar voice echoed softly across the lounge.
Vance gasped, turning pale as a sheet. 'Robert... you're supposed to be in Zurich...'
May you like
'I was,' Robert Mercer replied smoothly, stepping out of the shadows with a terrifying, familiar smile that looked almost identical to my father’s. 'Until I realized my stupid, greedy brother left loose ends trailing all the way to Switzerland.'
Before Robert could squeeze the trigger, Adrian moved with blinding, violent speed. He drew his sidearm, vaulted across the marble table, and tackled Robert Mercer to the ground just as a bullet shattered the glass skylight above us with a deafening crash.
