Chapter 8 - The Catwalk Standoff

The harsh glare of the overhead floodlights reflected off the rain-slicked concrete floor of the warehouse, illuminating the terrifying tactical disadvantage we had just walked into. Richard Sterling stood high above us on the metal catwalk, flanked by heavily armed mercenaries whose laser sights instantly locked onto our chests with lethal precision.

Adrian didn't flinch. His expression hardened into absolute ice as he stepped deliberately in front of me, raising his sidearm with cool, calculated professionalism while keeping his body positioned as a human shield.

'Richard,' Adrian said, his voice ringing out across the cavernous space with chilling calm. 'Trespassing on private industrial property, conspiring with federal felons, and now armed unlawful confinement. You really are determined to spend the rest of your natural life behind bars, aren't you?'

Sterling let out a smooth, condescending laugh, taking a slow sip from his crystal glass of scotch before setting it down on the metal railing. 'Bars, Adrian? Please. By sunrise, this entire warehouse—along with every single damaging piece of paper connecting my name to Ronald Mercer—will be reduced to smoking ash. A tragic electrical fire in an abandoned industrial zone. The local fire department will find two billionaire corpses and their lawyer, and the official police report will rule it a catastrophic accident.'

My blood ran cold. I clutched the forged will dossier tightly against my chest, my eyes darting frantically around the warehouse looking for an exit or a tactical advantage. There were no windows, only the heavy steel sliding door we had entered through, which was now securely padlocked and barricaded from the outside.

'You think you can murder us and simply walk away?' I called out, stepping out from behind Adrian despite his protective arm trying to push me back. I stared straight up at Sterling, my voice ringing with fierce, righteous fury. 'You think because you have money, the law won't touch you? Mason’s team transmitted our encrypted GPS coordinates and real-time cloud data back to federal authorities the second we breached this building. If we don't check in within fifteen minutes, an automated federal tactical strike team arrives here with a full arrest warrant for you.'

Sterling’s smug smile faltered for a fraction of a second, his eyes flickering toward Mason Reed, who stood calmly near the filing cabinets with his hands raised safely in the air, his fingers subtly hovering over a concealed satellite beacon in his jacket pocket.

A flicker of genuine doubt crossed Sterling’s face. He knew federal cyber-forensics were notoriously difficult to outrun once automated dead-man switches were tripped. He turned his head sharply toward the mercenary commander standing to his right—a scarred, cold-eyed brute named Vance—and gave a sharp, imperceptible nod.

'Get the documents from them and finish it now,' Sterling commanded harshly, turning away from the railing to head toward the exterior staircase leading down to the ground floor.

The mercenary commander raised his assault rifle, barking orders to his men. 'Move in! Secure the files and neutralize the targets!'

Two mercenaries immediately began descending the metal staircase on the left flank, their boots clanking loudly against the steps, while three others advanced across the ground floor, weapons leveled directly at us.

Adrian didn't wait. With blinding speed, he raised his sidearm and fired two precise shots toward the overhead electrical junction box mounted beside the catwalk stairs.

*SPARK! POP! CRACKLE!*

A shower of violent blue and white electrical sparks erupted from the blown junction box, instantly plunging the upper catwalk and half the warehouse into pitch darkness. Alarms shrieked loudly as emergency backup generators kicked in with a stuttering hum.

'Cover!' Adrian shouted, grabbing my arm and yanking me violently behind a massive, reinforced steel filing cabinet just as a burst of automatic gunfire shattered the air, riddling the wooden desk where we had been standing with a horrific spray of lead and splinters.

Mason and our two security guards returned fire instantly, their tactical muzzle flashes lighting up the gloom in rapid, blinding succession. A sharp cry echoed from the staircase as one of Sterling’s mercenaries took a round to the shoulder and tumbled backward down the metal steps with a heavy crash.

'Adrian, we're pinned!' Mason yelled over the deafening roar of gunfire, ducking low behind a concrete pillar. 'They've got us surrounded on three sides!'

I pressed my back hard against the cold steel filing cabinet, my heart pounding violently against my ribs. I looked down at the forged will dossier in my hands, then up at Adrian, who was calmly reloading his magazine with ice-cold focus.

'Listen to me,' I whispered urgently, leaning close to Adrian’s ear as bullets ricocheted off the filing cabinet above us, sending stinging showers of metal shrapnel raining down. 'There’s a secondary service tunnel map in Grandma Clara’s file cabinet drawer. It leads directly out to the drainage culvert behind the docks.'

Adrian looked at me, his eyes wide with surprise and fierce admiration. He didn't hesitate for a single second. 'Mason! Cover us! We’re making a break for the rear service hatch!'

With a coordinated burst of suppressing fire from Mason and our guards, Adrian grabbed my hand, and together we sprinted blindly through the smoke and gunfire toward the dark shadows at the back of the warehouse, leaving Richard Sterling and his mercenaries screaming in rage behind us.
