Chapter 4 - The Dangerous Alliance

The young man stepped forward as Emma approached the heavy library doors. He wore a tailored navy blazer and possessed sharp, aristocratic features, but his eyes held an unusual sincerity that contrasted with the ruthless world Emma was used to.
"You should be careful, Emma," the man said, his voice deep and calm. "My father doesn't make empty threats."
Emma halted, her defenses instantly flaring. "Who are you? How do you know my name?"
"I'm Lucas Vance," he answered, extending a hand that Emma deliberately ignored.
"Julian Vance’s son?" Emma took two steps back, her eyes narrowing with fury. "Did your father send you here to intimidate me? Because if you think—"
"I haven't spoken to my father in three years," Lucas interrupted quietly, lowering his hand without offense. "I run my own independent legal practice specializing in corporate whistleblowing. And I despise Julian Vance far more than you do."
Emma stared at him, searching his face for any hint of deceit. "Why are you here, Lucas?"
"Because your family is walking straight into an ambush," Lucas said, pulling a manila folder from his leather satchel. "Daniel Ross wasn't just Victoria's boy toy. He was on my father’s payroll for eight months before he ever met your mother. My father orchestrated the entire affair to compromise Victoria, blackmail her into embezzling your family's liquidity, and force a hostile board takeover."
Emma opened the folder. Inside were wire transfer receipts from a Vance Global shell company directly into Daniel Ross's Cayman Islands bank account.
"Why are you giving me this?" Emma asked, her voice trembling slightly as the scale of the conspiracy became clear.
"Because three years ago, my father did the exact same thing to my mother—drove her into bankruptcy and took everything she loved," Lucas said, a flash of pain crossing his dark eyes. "I couldn't stop him back then. But I can help you stop him now."
Emma looked from the documents back to Lucas. For the first time in weeks, she felt a glimmer of hope. "Where do we start?"
"We start with Daniel Ross," Lucas replied. "He's getting nervous. And a nervous pawn always makes mistakes."
Forty-eight hours after their meeting at Columbia, Lucas contacted Emma with urgent news. Daniel Ross had gone into hiding at a private beach house in the Hamptons, funded by Julian Vance, but the young man had begun making frantic demands for his final payment.
Inside Lucas's downtown Manhattan law office, the desk was covered in financial diagrams, audio recording software, and legal affidavits.
"Daniel called my father’s personal burner phone three times this morning," Lucas explained, plugging an external drive into his laptop. "I have a contact in telecom compliance who flagged the calls. Listen to this."
Lucas pressed play. Daniel's panicked voice filled the office speakers:
"Julian, you promised me five million in offshore bonds! The media is everywhere, Carter's lawyers are tracking my bank, and your security guys are watching my door! Pay me my exit money or I'm taking the encrypted flash drive to the District Attorney!"
Julian Vance’s icy, aristocratic voice replied on the recording: "You will stay in that house and keep your mouth shut until the shareholder vote next Thursday, Daniel. If you take one step out of line, I won't just withhold your money—I'll ensure you spend the next twenty years in federal prison for grand larceny."
Emma gripped the edge of the desk. "Daniel has a flash drive. What's on it?"
"Everything," Lucas said. "The voice recordings of Julian coaching Victoria, the ledger of forged wire transfers, and the digital signatures used to manipulate Carter Enterprises stock."
"If we get that drive, we can clear my father's company and send Julian to prison," Emma said, her pulse racing.
"Yes," Lucas warned, stepping closer to her. "But Julian knows that drive is a murder weapon. He won't let Daniel leave that house alive with it."
"Then we have to get to Daniel first," Emma said firmly.

Lucas looked down at her, impressed by her courage. "It's dangerous, Emma. If my father's private security catches us on that property—"
"My family is already in danger," Emma answered, meeting his gaze unflinchingly. "I'm not sitting in the corner while they tear my father apart. We go tonight."
