Chapter 5 - The Midnight Extraction and the Falling Patriarch

A heavy fog rolled off the Atlantic Ocean, blanketing the coastline in a damp, ghostly haze. At 1:00 AM, Lucas parked his nondescript black SUV two blocks away from the secluded beachfront estate where Daniel Ross was holed up.
Emma checked the battery on her encrypted audio recorder. Beside her, Lucas slipped on a dark jacket and pulled up the architectural blueprints of the property on his tablet.
"The security team consists of two guards at the main gate and one patrolling the perimeter," Lucas whispered. "The estate's rear deck faces the public beach. That’s our blind spot."
They moved silently across the damp sand, the sound of crashing waves masking their footsteps. Reaching the wooden stairs of the wraparound deck, Lucas gestured for Emma to stay low.
Through the large sliding glass doors, they could see Daniel pacing the living room like a caged animal, a glass of whiskey shaking in his hand. Suitcases were packed and piled near the front entrance.
Lucas tapped gently on the glass.
Daniel jumped, spinning around with wild, bloodshot eyes. When he saw Emma standing on the deck in the moonlight, his face went deathly pale. He stumbled toward the door, unlocking the latch and sliding it open just a few inches.
"Emma? Are you crazy?!" Daniel whispered harshly. "How did you find me? If Julian’s men see you here—"
"Julian's men aren't here to protect you, Daniel," Emma said coldly, stepping forward so he couldn't close the door. "They're here to make sure you never testify."
"She's right," Lucas added, stepping out from the shadows. "I'm Julian's son. I know how he cleans up loose ends. Once the board vote passes on Thursday, you won't be flying to the Bahamas. You'll be at the bottom of the East River."
Daniel's breathing grew ragged. "You're lying... he promised me—"
"Look outside, Daniel!" Emma pressed, pointing toward the dark driveway. "Have you tried to leave today? Have the guards let you take your car? You're a prisoner, not a partner."
Daniel dropped his glass; it shattered on the hardwood floor. "He took my passport. He told me it was for 'safe keeping'."
"Give us the drive, Daniel," Lucas urged. "Come with us right now. I will walk you directly into the U.S. Attorney's office and secure you federal immunity before my father realizes you're gone."
Daniel swallowed hard, his hands trembling as he reached into his jacket pocket.
Just as Daniel's fingers brushed against the metal casing of the USB drive, a sharp click echoed from the interior hallway.
"Step away from the door, Mr. Ross."
Two towering men dressed in dark tactical suits stepped into the living room, guns drawn and equipped with suppressors. It was Julian Vance’s private extraction team.
"They're taking the drive!" Daniel shrieked, panicking.
"Run!" Lucas shouted, shoving Emma behind the shelter of the exterior concrete pillar just as the first suppressed shot shattered the sliding glass door into thousands of glittering fragments.
Daniel bolted toward the rear deck, but a second guard lunged forward, tackling him to the floor. Daniel kicked violently, throwing the small silver flash drive across the wooden planks.
The drive skipped across the wet wood, coming to a rest right at Emma’s feet.
"Get the girl!" the lead guard barked.
Lucas didn't hesitate. He grabbed a heavy wooden deck chair and hurled it with full force into the oncoming guard, knocking the man off balance. "Emma, grab it and go to the car!"
Emma dropped to her knees, scooped the icy metal drive into her pocket, and scrambled down the beach stairs into the sand. Behind her, she heard the sound of furniture breaking and frantic shouting as Lucas wrestled with the remaining guard.
"Lucas!" Emma screamed, stopping at the edge of the dunes.
"Keep running!" Lucas yelled back, breaking free from the guard's grip and leaping over the deck railing into the sand below. He sprinted toward Emma, grabbing her hand. "Move!"
Gunfire kicked up sprays of sand behind them as they sprinted through the fog toward the tree line. Reaching the SUV, Lucas unlocked the doors, slammed the vehicle into reverse, and tore down the coastal road with the headlights off, disappearing into the thick maritime mist before the security guards could reach their vehicles.
The adrenaline of their narrow escape was instantly crushed when Emma’s phone buzzed with an urgent notification from Carter Enterprises' executive board secretary:
Emma, come to Manhattan Presbyterian Hospital immediately. Your father collapsed during an emergency board meeting.
Emma felt all the air leave her lungs. Lucas accelerated onto the FDR Drive, racing toward the hospital sirens.
Inside the intensive care unit, Richard Carter lay hooked to monitors, his face gray and exhausted. Arthur Pendelton stood near the window, looking as though he had aged ten years in a single night.
"Dad!" Emma gasped, rushing to her father's bedside and taking his cold, limp hand.
Richard's eyelids fluttered open slowly. "Emma... sweetheart..."
"He suffered an acute cardiac episode brought on by severe hypertensive stress," Arthur explained quietly. "Julian Vance leaked forged internal emails to the Wall Street Journal this evening, claiming Richard authorized illegal offshore shell companies. The board panicked. They called a vote of no confidence for tomorrow morning at nine o'clock."
"It's a complete frame-up," Emma cried, her voice cracking with fury.
"We know that, Emma, but without hard evidence, the board will strip Richard of his chairmanship tomorrow," Arthur said helplessly. "Julian owns fifteen percent of the shares and has proxy control over another thirty-five percent through Victoria's liquidated trusts. If Richard cannot vote his majority shares in person, Vance takes control of Carter Enterprises."
Emma stood up, wiping away her tears, and pulled the silver flash drive from her coat pocket. "We have the evidence. Everything Julian did—the bribes, the forged signatures, the wire fraud—it's all on this drive."

Richard squeezed Emma's hand weakly. "Emma... you can't go to that boardroom alone. Julian is ruthless..."
"You built this company for our family, Dad," Emma said softly, kissing her father’s forehead. "Now it's my turn to protect it."
