Chapter 2 - The Interrogation Room

The fluorescent lights of the precinct interview room hummed with a sterile, nerve-wracking vibration. I sat across the metal table, wrapped in a thick woolen police blanket, holding a warm styrofoam cup of black coffee between my palms. Across from me sat Detective Marcus Vance, a seasoned veteran with tired eyes and a notebook filled with meticulously structured timelines.

“Let’s go over this one more time, Mrs. Calder,” Detective Vance said, tapping his pen against the stainless steel table. “You suspected your daughter-in-law was attempting to force you out of your corporate shares through intimidation and sabotage?”

“Not just suspected, Detective,” I replied, my voice steady despite the lingering chill in my bones. “I had six weeks of documented evidence compiled by Mr. Pike. From forged medical evaluations claiming early-stage dementia to tampered brakes on my town car, Vanessa was systematic in her campaign.”

The heavy steel door swung open, and Graham Pike stepped inside, carrying a heavy secure hard drive and a stack of financial printouts. He placed them on the table between us. “Detective, I’ve just finished exporting the high-resolution footage from the property's main server, along with the cloud backup. Not only do we have clear, unedited video of Vanessa pushing Mrs. Calder into the deep end of the pool, but we also have wire transfer logs proving Vanessa paid off a corrupt family physician to forge the cognitive decline reports.”

Detective Vance opened the hard drive folder on his laptop. Within seconds, the crisp, undeniable video of Vanessa shoving me into the pool played on the screen. The angle from the security camera caught every malicious glint in her eyes, every deliberate push of her hands against my shoulders.

“Well,” Detective Vance muttered, leaning back in his chair with a low whistle. “That certainly removes any ambiguity about whether it was an accidental slip. We have attempted murder in the second degree, conspiracy, and financial fraud. Your daughter-in-law is going to have a very difficult time explaining this to a grand jury.”

“What about my son, Daniel?” I asked, the question tasting like ash in my mouth. “Did he know?”

Graham exchanged a brief, solemn glance with the detective before answering. “Mr. Calder signed off on several corporate restructuring documents that transferred voting rights directly to Vanessa last month. Whether he knew about the physical coercion or merely turned a blind eye out of cowardice remains to be proven. But his signature is on the corporate filings.”

My heart tightened in my chest. My only son, the boy I had raised alone after my husband passed away, had traded his mother’s safety for corporate leverage and marital peace. The grief was sharp and cold, far colder than the swimming pool water.

“I want to press charges on every single count,” I said, my voice hardening into steel. “No settlements, no quiet family deals. Vanessa wanted a war for Calder Senior Living. I’m going to give her a front-row seat to her own destruction.”

Detective Vance nodded slowly, closing his notebook with a definitive snap. “Then let’s issue the arrest warrant. We’ll bring her in before she has a chance to liquidate any offshore assets.”
