Chapter 3 - The Fall of the House of Calder

By noon the next day, the financial news networks and local tabloid sites were having a field day. Headlines blazed across television screens across the country: *Billionaire Heiress Arrested for Attempted Murder of Mother-in-Law at Housewarming Gala*. Images of Vanessa being led out of her mansion in handcuffs, her designer sunglasses hiding her tear-streaked face, flashed across every major media outlet.

I sat in my penthouse apartment overlooking the city skyline, watching the broadcast with a quiet cup of chamomile tea. The living room was serene, bathed in golden afternoon sunlight. My lawyer, Arthur Sterling, sat across from me, reviewing a thick stack of emergency injunctions.

“The board of directors of Calder Senior Living has called an emergency session for tomorrow morning,” Arthur said, adjusting his spectacles. “With Vanessa behind bars and her voting proxies frozen by the court order, you hold absolute majority control once again. Furthermore, we’ve frozen all joint accounts shared between Daniel and Vanessa to prevent asset dissipation.”

“And Daniel?” I asked, keeping my gaze fixed on the skyline.

“Your son has checked himself into a private hotel downtown, refusing to answer calls from reporters,” Arthur replied carefully. “He’s retained high-priced criminal defense counsel, but prosecutors are looking closely at his complicity in the corporate fraud scheme.”

The doorbell chimed softly. My housekeeper, Mrs. Gable, walked through the foyer and returned a moment later, looking hesitant. “Mrs. Calder, there’s someone downstairs demanding to see you. It’s... Mr. Daniel.”

I looked at Arthur, who simply nodded and began gathering his paperwork. “I’ll leave you two to talk, Eleanor. But remember, anything he says can and will be used in the ongoing corporate and criminal proceedings.”

A minute later, Daniel stepped into the living room. He looked older, his expensive tailored suit wrinkled, his hair uncombed. The arrogant swagger he had inherited from his father’s side of the family was completely gone, replaced by a desperate, hunted look.

“Mom,” Daniel choked out, taking a tentative step toward me before stopping as he saw the cold distance in my eyes. “Mom, you have to help me. They’re talking about freezing my personal accounts, the board is trying to oust me as vice president, and Vanessa... Vanessa is blaming the whole thing on me to cut a deal with the prosecutors.”

I took a slow sip of my tea, setting the porcelain cup down on the glass saucer with a delicate, ringing clink. “Vanessa is blaming you? After you stood by the bar with your champagne glass and watched her shove your sixty-four-year-old mother into a pool where she could have drowned?”

Daniel flinched as if I had struck him physically. He dropped his head into his hands, his shoulders shaking. “I froze, Mom! I didn’t think she would actually do it! I thought she was just blowing off steam about the shares!”

“You didn’t think she would try to kill me, or you simply didn’t care as long as the merger went through and your stock options doubled?” I stood up, my posture tall and unyielding, looking down at my only son with a mixture of profound disappointment and chilling resolve. “You watched her starve me out of family gatherings. You watched her spread lies about my mental health. You signed documents stealing my life’s work behind my back.”

“I’m your son!” Daniel cried out, looking up with tear-filled eyes. “Don’t destroy me along with her!”

“You destroyed yourself, Daniel,” I whispered coldly. “The board meeting is tomorrow. You’ll be stripped of your title just like your wife. Welcome to the real world.”
