Chapter 10 - The Senator’s Secret Ledger

Senator Thomas Sterling’s face tightened into an ugly scowl as I slid the manila folder across the witness table toward the committee’s legal counsel. 'General Reyes, do not attempt to deflect committee questioning with theatrical displays,' Sterling warned, his voice dripping with condescension. 'This committee determines who is under investigation, not an active-duty officer with a personal family grudge.' 'It’s not a personal grudge, Senator Sterling. It’s an accounting ledger,' I retorted sharply, my voice cutting through his intimidation attempt like a razor blade. 'Page four hundred and twelve of the seized Whitmore Aeronautics financial records details routing payments not just to Major Gregory Vance, but to political action committees tied directly to members of this very committee.'
The gallery behind us erupted instantly into a chorus of gasps and shouted whispers. Several journalists bolted from their seats toward the exit doors to file emergency news flashes. Senator Sterling’s face drained of color, his hand twitching involuntarily as he gripped the edges of his microphone. 'Order! Order in the committee room!' Sterling slammed his gavel down multiple times, his voice cracking with panic. 'The witness will refrain from making baseless, slanderous accusations against members of the United States Senate!' 'They aren't baseless, Senator,' Lieutenant Colonel Naomi Price stepped forward from the gallery aisle, holding an encrypted military tablet connected directly to the committee's master display screens.
With a few swift taps, Naomi projected a high-resolution, unredacted wire transfer receipt onto the massive wall monitors behind the dais. The document displayed a direct, three-million-dollar contribution funneled from a Whitmore Aeronautics shell company straight into Patriots for Strong Defense, Sterling’s primary re-election PAC, dated exactly two weeks before the committee approved the multi-billion-dollar Whitmore defense contract renewal. Senator Sterling stared at the monitor, his mouth opening silently like a stranded fish. The room fell into a terrifying, suffocating silence. Every eye in the chamber shifted from the glowing screen back to the Chairman’s trembling face.
'Furthermore,' I continued, leaning slightly over the witness microphone, 'Major Gregory Vance’s signed confession explicitly states that Senator Sterling’s office personally pressured the Pentagon logistics division to expedite customs clearance for the cargo flights coming out of West Africa. I have the recorded phone transcripts right here.' Daniel stood up from the gallery bench, stepping forward to place a secondary physical binder on the witness table containing the intercepted telecommunication logs between Sterling’s chief of staff and Arthur Pendelton. Sterling looked around the dais, but his fellow committee members were already recoiling from him, their chairs sliding backward on the marble floor as they distanced themselves from the unfolding scandal.

'This... this is a fraudulent fabrication! A military coup via political assassination!' Sterling shrieked, standing up so fast his chair crashed to the floor behind him. He pointed a shaking finger directly at my face. 'You're destroying national security, General! You're destroying the nation!' 'No, Senator,' I said, standing up to my full height, towering over the witness table in my pristine uniform, my ribbons gleaming under the harsh lights. 'We are finally defending it.' Before Sterling could sputter another word, two armed U.S. Capitol Police officers, acting on direct orders from the Department of Justice special prosecutor seated in the back row, stepped up behind the Chairman’s seat. Cold steel handcuffs clicked around the wrists of one of the most powerful politicians in Washington, D.C. The corruption was being ripped out by the roots, live on national television.
