Chapter 4 - The Price of Blood

The flashbulbs from the media horde stationed near the vestibule painted the chapel walls in erratic, blinding bursts of white. Arthur Pendelton, Charles’s chief legal counsel, finally pushed his way past the rows of wooden pews, his face deathly pale as he thrust a smartphone into Charles’s line of sight. 'Mr. Whitmore, look at the market ticker,' Pendelton stammered, his voice shaking. 'Whitmore Aeronautics stock just hit circuit breaker down. Institutional investors are dumping millions of shares by the second. The SEC has already issued a formal freeze on trading pending fraud investigations.' Charles snatched the phone from his lawyer’s hand, his eyes scanning the glowing screen.

The vibrant corporate titan looked ten years older in a matter of seconds, his skin turning an unhealthy, ash-grey hue. The billions of dollars in federal contracts, the sprawling estates in McLean, the private jets, the social dominance—all of it was vaporizing into thin air, incinerated by the very truth he had spent four years burying. 'You've ruined us,' Charles whispered, his voice barely audible over the hum of camera shutters. 'You’ve destroyed everything your grandfather built from the ground up.' 'My grandfather built Whitmore Aviation on engineering integrity and the blood of honest mechanics,' I retorted, stepping closer, the jagged scars on my neck stark against the pristine white bodice of my dress. 'You turned it into a slaughterhouse for profit. Those twelve soldiers who died in the Korengal Valley had families. They had mothers who cried themselves to sleep, children who grew up without fathers. Where was your family loyalty when you signed off on those defective chips?'

Daniel stepped up beside me, gently placing his hand over mine. The hesitation in his eyes was entirely gone, replaced by a fierce, unwavering solidarity. 'Your father didn't just betray his country, Mara,' Daniel said, his voice hard as tempered steel. 'He committed treason under the wartime procurement acts. The Department of Justice won't just fine him; they're going to strip the corporate charter.' Admiral Mercer stepped forward, signaling to the military police officers who had accompanied Naomi Price. 'Charles Whitmore, by order of the United States District Court and the Department of Defense, you are hereby detained for questioning regarding federal procurement fraud, obstruction of justice, and criminal negligence resulting in military casualties.'

Two MPs stepped forward, their heavy boots hitting the marble floor with synchronized precision. Before Charles could protest, before his lawyer could sputter another legal objection, cold steel cuffs clicked around his wrists. The billionaire CEO, accustomed to walking the halls of the White House and dining with senators, was spun around and forced to walk down the very aisle where he had just humiliated his daughter. As they led him past the front pews, Charles turned his head, casting a venomous glare in my direction. 'You think you've won, Mara?' he sneered, spittle flying from his lips. 'You think the military is your savior? They own you just as much as they own me! When the classified archives from your last classified mission in West Africa drop next week, let's see how proud your precious general friends are of their hero!' The chapel doors slammed shut behind him, cutting off his manicured rage. I stood in the center of the altar, the silence rushing back in, but the lingering echo of his parting threat hung heavily in the air. What did he know about West Africa? And more importantly, why did my chest tighten with a sudden, suffocating dread?
