Chapter 12 - The Viper’s Final Strike

The transition into my new role as Director of Defense Ethics and Logistics Reform was swift, brutal, and utterly relentless. For three solid weeks, my team and I audited warehouse inventories, tracked component serial numbers, and dismantled ghost corporations embedded deep within the Pentagon's procurement pipelines. But corruption of that magnitude didn't surrender quietly. It was a crisp Tuesday morning when Lieutenant Colonel Naomi Price rushed into my secure office, bypassing protocol entirely, holding a red-flagged tablet against her chest.

'General, we have an emergency breach,' Naomi said, her face pale as she slapped the tablet down on my desk. 'A high-level cyber attack just hit the central logistics database at Fort Bragg. Someone is wiping out the digital audit trails of every rogue contractor tied to the Whitmore network.' I surged to my feet, my military instincts flaring instantly. 'Trace the IP address! Who has root access to bypass the firewall?' 'That’s the horrifying part, General,' Naomi stammered, her fingers flying across her own mobile console. 'The override wasn't executed from an external hacker collective or a foreign intelligence agency. The digital signature used to unlock the firewall belongs to... Major Gregory Vance.'

I froze. 'Vance is locked in a maximum-security military holding facility in Fort Leavenworth! He doesn't even have access to a pencil, let alone a terminal!' 'He had help on the outside,' a cold, distorted voice echoed from the wall-mounted intercom speaker in my office. I spun around, drawing my sidearm in one fluid, terrifying motion. Naomi dropped into a defensive tactical stance, her hand hovering over her weapon. The intercom system crackled, static hissing before a familiar, arrogant laugh filled the room. Did you really think Charles Whitmore was the only spider in this web, General Reyes? the voice purred. It wasn't Vance. It was Arthur Pendelton, Charles’s chief legal counsel—the man who had vanished the day Charles was arrested.

'Pendelton,' I snarled into the desk microphone. 'Where are you?' I’m sitting very comfortably in a private offshore bunker, General, watching your entire multi-billion-dollar reform initiative collapse in real-time, Pendelton replied, sounding entirely unhinged. You thought locking up Charles and some low-level major would cleanse the system? We own half the civilian contractors supplying your precious frontline troops. And right now, every single combat vehicle in the Middle East and Eastern Europe just lost its encrypted GPS guidance system.

My blood ran ice cold. If civilian contractor navigation systems went dark globally, thousands of American soldiers on active deployment would be sitting ducks in hostile territory. 'You’ve committed mass sabotage against active duty forces,' I said, my voice dropping into a deadly, controlled whisper. 'That’s an act of war, Pendelton. Delta Force is going to hunt you down before sunset.' Let them try, General! Pendelton laughed maniacally. Unless you personally walk out of the Pentagon right now, drop your badge, and announce your resignation on live television, claiming your audit was politically motivated... I’ll push the kill switch on every encrypted medical supply pipeline in the field within the hour. The line went dead with a sharp click. Naomi looked at me, horror etched into her features. 'General... the medical supply grid feeds frontline field hospitals. If he cuts that...' 'He won't get the chance,' I interrupted, slamming my sidearm back into its holster. 'Naomi, patch me directly into Admiral Mercer and cyber command. We’re hunting a ghost across international waters.'
