Chapter 15 - The Subpoena

The afternoon sun beat down on the steps of the United States District Courthouse, casting long, sharp shadows across the limestone pillars. Reporters and camera crews milled about near the entrance, their microphones poised to capture every detail of what the local media had dubbed *'The Greed Trap Trial.'*

Inside the grand, wood-paneled courtroom, federal Judge Patricia Sterling sat behind the high mahogany bench, her expression stern and uncompromising. Seated at the defense table were Elaine and Marcus, both clad in prison orange, flanked by court-appointed public defenders who looked thoroughly exhausted by the indefensible nature of their clients' actions.

The federal prosecutor stood up, smoothing down his tie before addressing the bench. 'Your Honor, the government submits Exhibit A through L: four years of intercepted wire transfer records, forensic accounting audits proving embezzlement, medical evaluations detailing severe spousal abuse, and verified audio recordings of extortion.'

Judge Sterling reviewed the documents, her sharp eyes scanning the pages with mounting disgust. She looked down from the bench, fixing her gaze squarely on Elaine and Marcus.

'Mrs. Vance, Mr. Vance,' Judge Sterling’s voice echoed clearly through the silent courtroom. 'In my thirty years on the federal bench, I have rarely encountered such a calculated, callous abuse of family trust and human dignity. You treated another human being like an animal, and you treated your own son’s hard-earned labor as your personal ATM.'

She picked up her wooden gavel, pausing for a fraction of a second before delivering the final verdict.

'For the charges of wire fraud, financial extortion, interstate conspiracy, and willful endangerment, this court sentences Elaine Vance to twenty-five years in federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole. Marcus Vance is sentenced to twenty years for racketeering, assault, and financial fraud.'

The sharp crack of the gavel echoed through the courtroom like a gunshot. Elaine slumped forward over the defense table, letting out a wailing cry of utter despair, while Marcus stared blankly ahead as federal marshals stepped forward to lead them away in chains.

The trap was fully closed. Justice had been executed down to the very last syllable.
