Chapter 6 - The Dinner of Hypocrisy

The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the suburban sky in bruised shades of violet and orange as I pulled my rental car back into the driveway of my family home. The house was blazing with light from every window, and through the glass, I could see Elaine and Marcus moving about with frantic, manic energy.
When I pushed open the front door, the smell of expensive champagne and roasted garlic hit me instantly. Marcus was standing in the living room holding an open bottle of Dom Pérignon, while Elaine was frantically scrolling through a luxury clothing catalog on her tablet, her face flushed with excitement.
'There he is!' Marcus crowed, setting down the champagne flute and walking over to clap me on the back with forced brotherly affection. 'Bro, you wouldn’t believe it! We just logged into the account app you gave us. We saw the seven figures sitting right there in the holding vault! It’s real! Every single penny!'
Elaine rushed over, her eyes shining with manic delight as she smoothed down the lapels of my jacket. 'Oh, Daniel, my brilliant boy! We already started making a small list of essential purchases. Just minor things to celebrate our new beginning! A brand-new European luxury sedan for Marcus so he can attend business meetings with proper status, and a deposit on that coastal vacation home we always dreamed of!'
I looked at them, marveling at the sheer depth of their delusion. They had spent the entire day staring at a mock digital interface, entirely convinced they were masters of the universe, completely blind to the fact that the very application they were praising was a federal honey-pot tracking every IP address, login timestamp, and device fingerprint.
'I’m glad you’re excited, Mom,' I said smoothly, stepping past them into the kitchen and pouring myself a glass of ice water. 'Did you try to execute a test transfer yet?'
Elaine’s smile flickered for a fraction of a second before returning with renewed vigor. 'Well... we tried to wire a small deposit of fifty thousand dollars to Marcus’s dealership account just to test the system. But the app prompted us for a biometric master key authorization.' She pouted playfully, patting my arm. 'You silly goose, you forgot to give us the master key!'
I took a slow sip of water, letting the silence stretch out just long enough to make them sweat. 'I didn't forget, Elaine. As I said this morning, the master key requires my direct physical authorization and a multi-factor federal security clearance.'
Marcus’s smile tightened significantly, a flash of irritation breaking through his jovial facade. 'Come on, bro. You don’t need to treat us like criminals. We’re family! Why do you need federal clearance just to move family funds around?'
'Because,' I replied, turning to face them with a calm, unblinking stare, 'last time I left my finances in this family’s hands while I was working construction in Canada, hundreds of thousands of dollars mysteriously vanished into thin air, and my wife ended up starving and shaved in the backyard. Call me overly cautious, but I prefer a slightly tighter leash this time around.'
The air in the room went dead silent. Elaine’s jaw tightened, her maternal mask slipping for a terrifying instant to reveal the cold, manipulative tyrant beneath. 'Is that what that ungrateful whore has been whispering in your ear?' she hissed, her voice dropping an octave. 'You’re letting a stray dog poison your mind against your own flesh and blood?'
'Watch your tone, Elaine,' I said softly, but the sheer iciness in my voice made her step back involuntarily. 'Lily is my wife. And right now, every single action you took against her over the past four years is currently being reviewed by federal prosecutors.'
Marcus let out a harsh, nervous laugh, pouring himself another glass of champagne. 'Federal prosecutors? Oh, come on, Daniel! Are you seriously threatening your own family over a little domestic squabble? You’ve been working too hard in those cold Canadian mines; your brain is freezing up!'
'Is it?' I asked, pulling my burner phone out of my pocket and tapping the screen. I hit play on an audio file. Instantly, the living room speakers filled with Elaine’s voice from our dinner conversation the previous night, clearly detailing her itemized fake debts and demanding eight hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
The color drained entirely from Elaine’s face. She stared at the phone in my hand as if it were a venomous snake.
'That... that’s inadmissible!' Marcus stammered, lunging forward to grab the phone from my hand. 'You recorded us without our consent!'
I sidestepped effortlessly, slipping the phone back into my pocket while keeping my eyes locked on my brother. 'In a private residence? Maybe in a civil dispute. But when combined with federal wire fraud, extortion, and interstate financial manipulation across international borders? That audio recording is a golden ticket straight to a federal penitentiary.'
Marcus lunged at me in a blind rage, his fist cocked back to strike. But I was prepared. I stepped inside his swing, caught his wrist with iron strength, and twisted his arm upward with a sharp, controlled snap that brought him crashing down onto his knees on the hardwood floor, crying out in pain.
Elaine screamed, clutching her chest in horror. 'Daniel! Stop! He’s your brother!'
I leaned down, pressing my face close to Marcus’s sweating, terrified visage as he whimpered beneath my grip. 'My brother?' I whispered coldly into his ear. 'My brother wouldn’t starve my wife or steal my sweat and blood. You built this trap, Marcus. And every time you struggle, you only pull the wire tighter.'

I released his arm, stepping back and straightening my suit jacket as Marcus scrambled backward across the floor like a wounded animal. I gave them one final, lingering look.
'Enjoy your dinner, family,' I said smoothly. 'Tomorrow morning, the real auditors arrive.'
