Chapter 2 - The Price of Greed

The evening shadows stretched long and twisted across the living room floor, casting a gloomy amber glow over the worn-out furniture. Elaine had gone all out for dinner, preparing an extravagant spread of prime rib, roasted potatoes, and expensive wine—an obvious performance designed to showcase comfort, hospitality, and family unity. Yet the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.
Lily sat quietly in the far corner of the dining table, wearing a clean, oversized sweater I had fished out of my duffel bag. She barely touched her food, her eyes darting nervously between Elaine, Marcus, and me. Every time Marcus reached for the salt shaker, Lily instinctively flinched, a heartbreaking reflex born of four years of systematic intimidation and physical abuse.
Elaine cleared her throat, dabbing her mouth delicately with a linen napkin before leaning forward across the mahogany table. She wore her best earrings, the ones I had bought her for Mother’s Day three years ago using money I scraped together by working double shifts on a frigid pipeline in Alberta. 'Well, Daniel,' she began, pitching her voice into that practiced, maternal tone of martyrdom she had perfected over decades. 'Now that you’re back and blessed with this miraculous one-million-dollar settlement, it’s time we talk about clearing the slate and securing our family’s future.'
Marcus chimed in immediately, cutting her off with the casual arrogance of someone who felt entitled to a kingdom he never built. 'Let’s be realistic, bro. Inflation has been brutal. Between maintaining this house, property taxes, medical insurance, and the emotional toll we suffered while you were away living it up in Canada, expenses piled up like crazy.'
I slowly set down my fork, my movements deliberate and controlled. 'Is that so, Marcus? Expenses?'
'Exactly,' Elaine said, nodding eagerly as she pulled a neatly folded legal pad from beneath the table. She slid it across the wooden surface toward me like a merchant presenting an invoice to a wealthy patron. 'I itemized everything, Daniel. Every single sacrifice we made.'
I picked up the pad. The pages were filled with Elaine’s meticulous cursive handwriting, detailing an imaginary ledger of debt. House maintenance: forty thousand dollars. Emotional hardship compensation: one hundred thousand dollars. Back-pay for housing Lily: thirty-five thousand dollars. Marcus’s business startup capital: two hundred thousand dollars. In total, their itemized list demanded exactly eight hundred and fifty thousand dollars of my million-dollar settlement, leaving me with a meager one hundred and fifty thousand—just enough to start over, or so they thought.
I stared at the paper for a long moment, letting the silence stretch until Elaine began to fidget under my unwavering gaze. 'Impressive accounting, Mom,' I said softly, my voice completely devoid of emotion. 'You managed to calculate my entire financial future down to the last penny before I even walked through the front door.'
Marcus chuckled nervously, attempting to break the tension with a backhanded slap to my shoulder. 'Hey man, family helps family. You were out there swinging hammers in the snow while we held down the fort here. It’s only fair that we share the harvest.'
'Share,' I repeated, tasting the word like poison on my tongue. 'Tell me, Marcus... how does keeping my wife locked outside in the backyard, starving her, and shaving her head fall under the category of holding down the fort?'
The room went stone dead. The sound of a ceiling fan spinning overhead suddenly felt deafening. Elaine’s smile vanished completely, replaced by a flash of genuine panic before her features hardened into defensive fury. 'Don’t you dare turn this around on us, Daniel!' she snapped, slamming her hand down on the table so hard the silverware rattled. 'That ungrateful parasite brought disgrace upon our family name! She stole cash from my purse, she refused to do chores, and she threw public tantrums! We showed her mercy by not kicking her out onto the streets!'
Lily shrank back into her chair, her breath catching in her throat. Seeing her terror reignited the cold fury burning in my chest, but I forced my muscles to relax. I needed them to dig their own graves much deeper before I dropped the hammer.
I leaned back in my chair, crossing my arms over my chest. 'Stole cash?' I asked calmly. 'Strange, because according to the police report I filed regarding the missing funds from my Canadian accounts, Lily didn't have access to the online banking portals. In fact, all electronic transfers from my payroll went directly into a joint account managed exclusively by you, Elaine.'
Elaine’s face drained of color once more, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. 'What... what are you talking about? Are you accusing your own mother of stealing?'
'I’m not accusing anyone of anything yet, Mom,' I replied with a chilling, reassuring smile that reached nowhere near my eyes. 'I’m just reviewing the data. As a matter of fact, since I want to be entirely fair to this family, I’m willing to transfer the entire one million dollars into a joint family escrow account tomorrow morning. That way, we can all manage it together transparently.'
Greed is a blinding disease. The moment the phrase *one million dollars into a joint escrow account* left my lips, Elaine’s panic dissolved entirely, overwritten instantly by blinding avarice. Her eyes lit up with predatory excitement, and she reached across the table to clasp my hands. 'Oh, Daniel... I knew you were always my smartest son. We’ll make sure every dollar multiplies tenfold. Marcus has brilliant investment ideas, don't you, Marcus?'
May you like
Marcus grinned ear to ear, nodding frantically. 'Absolutely, Mom. Real estate, crypto ventures, high-yield funds. We’ll double this money in six months.'
I nodded slowly, letting them bask in the intoxicating illusion of unimaginable wealth. They truly believed they had won. They had no idea that the routing and account numbers I planned to give them tomorrow morning belonged to a high-security federal asset-freeze account designed specifically to trap white-collar fraud and financial predators. The feast had only just begun, and my family was starving for a ruin they couldn't possibly imagine.
