Chapter 4 - The First Bleed

The morning sun broke through the curtains with a sharp, blinding brilliance, casting long stripes of gold across the hardwood floor. Downstairs, the unmistakable clatter of silverware and the smell of freshly brewed gourmet coffee signaled that Elaine was already awake, playing the gracious matriarch preparing for a triumphant day.

I quietly slipped out of bed, ensuring Lily was sleeping peacefully beneath the covers. I dressed in a sharp charcoal suit—the kind I wore when meeting with high-level corporate executives in Toronto—and slicked back my hair. When I walked down the stairs, the transformation was so stark that Marcus, who was sitting at the kitchen island reading the financial news, nearly choked on his bacon.

'Damn, look at you, Wall Street,' Marcus joked, forcing a hearty laugh as he eyed my expensive Italian leather shoes. 'Going to cash the check in style, huh?'

'Something like that,' I replied evenly, pulling out a chair and sitting down. Elaine bustled over immediately, pouring a steaming cup of coffee into my mug with hands that trembled slightly with excitement. Her eyes were bright with unmasked greed.

'Good morning, my wonderful son,' Elaine cooed, resting a manicured hand affectionately on my shoulder. 'Did you sleep well? I told Marcus last night how wonderful it is to have our family reunited at last. We were just discussing how best to structure the escrow transfer. Have you contacted your bank yet?'

I took a slow sip of the coffee, savoring the bitter warmth before setting the mug down. 'I already initiated the transfer protocol this morning through my encrypted corporate portal,' I said calmly, watching their faces light up like children on Christmas morning. 'The funds are currently moving from the Canadian settlement trust into a designated holding account.'

Elaine let out a breathless gasp of pure ecstasy, clapping her hands together. 'Oh, thank heavens! See, Marcus? I told you your brother would do the right thing! We’re saved! All our debts, wiped clean in a single stroke!'

Marcus grinned wolfishly, leaning back in his stool. 'Hell yeah. First thing I’m doing is clearing my tab at the club, and then putting a down payment on that new sports coupe down at the dealership. We’re finally back on top, Mom.'

I watched them reveling in their delusion, feeling a cold satisfaction settle deep in my chest. They assumed the money was landing in an account they could freely raid. They had no idea that the 'holding account' I referenced was actually a specialized federal escrow vault flagged for suspicious activity review—a legal black hole that would freeze any outgoing transactions the moment Elaine or Marcus attempted to touch a single cent.

'There is just one condition,' I said softly, cutting through their celebration like a razor blade.

Elaine blinked, her smile faltering slightly. 'A condition? What kind of condition, Daniel? We’re family.'

'To ensure absolute transparency and compliance with federal tax regulations regarding foreign settlements, the account requires dual authorization for any withdrawal,' I explained with a completely straight face, leaning forward. 'You and Marcus can view the balance at any time using the mobile app login I’m about to give you. But every single transaction must be verified with my biometric signature or my master cryptographic key.'

Marcus’s smile tightened, a flicker of irritation crossing his brow. 'Wait a minute. You’re holding the keys? Why can't Mom just have full signatory power? After all, she practically raised you!'

I met Marcus’s gaze with a stare so icy it made him physically recoil. 'Because, Marcus, it’s *my* settlement check resulting from *my* permanent physical injury in a foreign country. If you don't like the terms, I can easily cancel the transfer and keep the funds in a locked Canadian trust where no one in this house will ever see a dime.'

The threat hit its mark with devastating precision. Elaine immediately elbowed Marcus in the ribs, her expression twisting into desperate anxiety. 'Shut up, Marcus!' she hissed before turning back to me with a wide, placid smile. 'Of course we accept your terms, Daniel! You’re entirely right to be cautious. Security first! Right, Marcus?'

Marcus swallowed hard, forcing a tight, miserable nod. 'Yeah. Totally, bro. Security first.'

I pulled out my burner phone, tapped the screen a few times, and slid a slip of paper across the table containing a username and a temporary password to a mock dashboard I had specially coded for them. It showed a glorious, shimmering balance of exactly one million dollars.

As Elaine snatched up the paper like a starving wolf seizing a piece of meat, I stood up from the table, buttoned my suit jacket, and gave them a parting smile. 'Enjoy watching the balance, family. I have some errands to run in town. I’ll be back this afternoon.'

As I walked out the front door and climbed into my rental car, I glanced in my rearview mirror. Elaine and Marcus were already huddled over a smartphone together, their faces illuminated by the green glow of the fake balance, completely oblivious to the fact that the first drop of blood had just been drawn in a trap from which there was no escape.
