Chapter 16 - The Trap on Route 9

By three A.M., the storm had passed, leaving the city washed clean under a rising crescent moon.
Inside the precinct station, the atmosphere was electric. Detective Vance sat at his desk, filing the formal arrest charges against Julian Bennett and Victor Vance - including attempted double murder, corporate fraud, conspiracy, and hiring mercenary operatives.
Laura sat in a leather armchair in Vance's office, holding a mug of warm tea. Ben was asleep on a small sofa nearby, wrapped in his favorite blanket.
Daniel stood by the window, looking out over the sleeping city. His tux jacket was gone, his shirt sleeves rolled up, revealing the fresh scratches and bruises from the docks.
Laura stood up and walked over to him, standing quietly by his side.
"It's really over, isn't it?" she asked softly.
"It's over," Daniel replied. "Julian will spend the rest of his life in a federal facility. The company is secure. Ben is safe."
Laura looked up at his profile - the sharp jawline, the quiet strength, the deep blue eyes that were no longer shadowed by despair. "And what about you, Daniel? What happens to Captain Mercer now?"
Daniel let out a long, quiet breath. "For three years, I thought my life ended under Riverside Bridge. I thought I was just waiting around for the cold to finish me off. But sitting in that river... holding Ben... I realized something."
"What?" Laura asked, her hand gently finding his.
"God didn't put me under that bridge to die," Daniel said softly, turning to face her. "He put me there so I'd be ready when you fell."
Laura's eyes brimmed with warm tears. She stepped closer, reaching up to touch his cheek. "Then stay, Daniel. Don't go back to hiding. Build a life with us."
Daniel looked down at her, feeling a profound sense of peace settle over his heart - a feeling he hadn't known in over a decade. "I'm not going anywhere, Laura."
Two weeks later, the Bennett Global Logistics annual shareholders meeting convened. With Julian removed and facing trial, Laura was unanimously elected Chairman of the Board.

Her very first executive decision was the creation of the Riverside Veterans Foundation - a fifty-million-dollar initiative dedicated to providing housing, job training, and mental health support for homeless military veterans across the state.
And standing right beside her, named as the Foundation's Executive Director, was Daniel Mercer.
