Chapter 20 - Sunrise Over the River

Two years after the crash on Riverside Bridge, the morning sun rose over the river in a blaze of brilliant gold and pink light.

The water below reflected the sky like a liquid mirror, flowing softly past the massive concrete pilings that had once sheltered a forgotten soldier.

On the granite plaza overlooking the river, a small, intimate wedding ceremony was taking place.

Laura stood beneath an archway of white roses, looking breathtaking in an elegant lace wedding gown. Beside her stood Daniel, tall and handsome in a navy suit, his eyes filled with an overwhelming, unconditional love.

Standing right beside Daniel as his best man was seven-year-old Ben, looking sharp in a matching miniature tuxedo, holding a velvet ring box with extreme solemnity.

Detective Vance, now retired from the police force, stood among the fifty close friends, veterans, and family members seated in the audience, wiping a tear from his eye.

The minister smiled warmly at the couple. "Daniel, do you take Laura to be your lawful wedded wife, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do you part?"

Daniel looked straight into Laura's shining eyes. "I do," he said, his voice deep, strong, and unwavering.

"And Laura, do you take Daniel to be your lawful wedded husband?"

"I do," Laura said, her voice filled with pure joy.

"By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife," the minister declared. "Daniel, you may kiss your bride."

Daniel wrapped his arms around Laura and pulled her close, kissing her deeply as the crowd erupted into loud cheers and applause. Ben threw his hands in the air, shouting, "Yeah! We're a real family now!"

After the ceremony, as guests gathered for breakfast on the plaza terrace, Daniel and Laura walked to the edge of the stone railing, looking down at the river below.

The air was warm, smelling of pine and fresh river water. A gentle breeze stirred Laura's veil.

Daniel looked down at the dark water where he had dived twice into terror and death two years ago. He remembered the cold, the darkness, the burning in his lungs, and the sheer terror of losing everything.

He slipped his arm around Laura's waist, pulling her tight against his side. Ben ran up, wrapping his arms around both of their legs.

Daniel looked at his wife and son, then out at the golden horizon where the sun was climbing high into a clear blue sky.

He had gone into that freezing river to save a mother and her son. But in those black, furious seconds beneath the current, he had hauled up something far greater than he ever dreamed possible.

May you like

He had hauled up a family. He had hauled up his honor.

And for the first time in his life... he was finally home.
