Chapter 9 - The Target on Elm Street

The news broke on Tuesday morning, tearing through the city like a wildfire.

Daniel sat in the breakroom at Hollister's Machining, staring at the television mounted on the wall. A sensationalist morning news anchor stood outside the precinct holding a sheaf of papers.

"Breaking news in the Riverside Bridge rescue story," the anchor proclaimed dramatically. "Documents leaked to this station raise shocking questions about Daniel Mercer, the homeless veteran hailed as a local hero. Official military records reveal that Mercer was relieved of his command in 2018 following a deadly incident in Afghanistan that resulted in the loss of three men under his command. Furthermore, local police records show multiple arrests for public intoxication and assault."

The screen shifted to a photo of Daniel's old mugshot from four years ago - bearded, bloodshot eyes, looking hollowed out by despair.

"Is Daniel Mercer truly a self-sacrificing hero," the anchor continued, "or an unstable, disgraced ex-soldier seeking public attention?"

In the breakroom, two young machinists turned to stare at Daniel. The air grew instantly heavy with uncomfortable silence.

Rick Hollister stepped into the breakroom, holding a mug of coffee. He glared at the television, then turned his fierce gaze onto the two workers. "What are you two staring at? Get back to your stations! Those aerospace valves aren't going to turn themselves!"

The workers scrambled out of the room. Rick slammed the door shut and looked at Daniel, who remained seated, staring blankly at his own mugshot on the screen.

"It's Julian Bennett," Daniel said quietly, his voice devoid of emotion. "He promised he would destroy my credibility if I didn't take his money."

"Do you want me to turn the TV off, Dan?" Rick asked gently.

"No," Daniel replied. "The court-martial stuff is public record if you know where to dig. The patrol I led in 2018 was ambushed. My lieutenant made a rogue decision that got two guys killed. I took the responsibility because I was the commander. The army let me walk with a general discharge, but I couldn't live with the guilt. That's when the drinking started."

Rick walked over and clapped a heavy hand on Daniel's shoulder. "I don't give a damn about leaked papers from a sleazy corporate lawyer, Dan. I know the man working on my lathe floor. You saved a kid and his mother. That news anchor wasn't in that cold river. You were."

"Thanks, Rick," Daniel said quietly.

"Now get back to work," Rick added with a faint grin. "You're five minutes behind schedule."

While Daniel returned to the lathe line, Laura Bennett was launching her own counter-strike.

At eleven A.M., she held an unannounced press conference on the front steps of Bennett Logistics headquarters. Dressed in a striking navy suit, surrounded by microphones from every major network, she looked directly into the camera lenses.

"Certain cowardly individuals are currently leaking altered and out-of-context records to attack the character of Daniel Mercer," Laura declared, her voice ringing with absolute conviction. "They want you to focus on his past struggles rather than his courage. But let me be unequivocally clear: when my vehicle went into the river, no corporate board member came to save my son. No high-paid media consultant dove into forty-degree water. Daniel Mercer did. He is a man of honor, and those attempting to smear his name only expose their own terrifying corruption!"

Watching the live broadcast from his carriage house balcony later that afternoon, Daniel felt a profound warmth expand in his chest. For years, he had believed he was beyond redemption. But Laura Bennett had just stood before the entire city and declared that he was worth fighting for.
