Chapter 8 - The Empire on the Hill

Perched atop a granite bluff overlooking the harbor sat the Bennett Manor - a massive Tudor-style estate surrounded by ten acres of manicured lawn and tall wrought-iron security gates.

Laura Bennett stood in the grand library, watching from the floor-to-ceiling windows as a flatbed tow truck hauled away the private security vehicles Julian had provided. Standing beside her was Detective Vance and Daniel, who had arrived thirty minutes after his shift ended at the machine shop.

"They didn't like being dismissed," Laura noted, turning back to the room. "The lead guard threatened to report me to the corporate board for 'reckless behavior.'"

"Let him report," Vance said, taking a sip of water. "I spoke with the precinct commander. We're assigning two uniformed Metro officers to park outside your gate twenty-four hours a day until the grand jury convenes."

"Uniformed cops are good for deterrence, Detective," Daniel said, examining the perimeter security monitors on the desk. "But they aren't trained to stop a targeted military-grade hit. The cut brake lines prove Julian isn't using amateur street thugs. He hired professionals."

Laura looked at Daniel, noticing the grease under his fingernails and the fierce, protective authority in his posture. "What do you suggest, Daniel?"

"You need a complete security audit," Daniel said. "Change all electronic lock codes on the estate. Terminate any third-party service contractors who had access to your garage in the last ninety days. And you need someone inside this house who knows how to counter covert entry."

Laura didn't hesitate. "Then I want you to move in."

Detective Vance raised an eyebrow. "Mrs. Bennett, Mr. Mercer is a civilian now. While I respect his service record..."

"Mr. Mercer saved my life and my son's life while you were still dispatching cars, Detective," Laura interrupted firmly. "He recognized the cut brake lines before your forensic team even finished their preliminary report. I trust him."

Daniel held up a hand. "Laura, I have a new job at the shop. I'm trying to rebuild my life step-by-step. I can't just move into a mansion."

"You don't have to quit your job," Laura pleaded, stepping closer to him. "The carriage house at the back of the property is completely furnished and empty. You can live there rent-free. Work your shifts at the shop during the day, and keep an eye on us at night. Ben would be thrilled... and I would finally be able to sleep."

Daniel looked at Laura's tired, elegant face. He saw the terrifying weight she was carrying alone - protecting her child from a predatory brother-in-law while navigating a massive corporate empire. He knew what it felt like to be hunted and alone.

"The carriage house," Daniel agreed slowly. "On one condition."

"Name it," Laura said.

"I pay rent. Whatever the fair rate is, deducted from my shop paycheck every month."

Laura smiled softly, a flicker of genuine warmth lighting up her eyes. "Deal, Captain Mercer."

Later that evening, Daniel moved his single canvas duffel bag into the carriage house. It was a beautiful, two-story stone building with hardwood floors and a balcony overlooking the gardens.

As he unpacked his three shirts and his spare boots, he took out Ben's blue crayon drawing. He carefully taped it to the center of the wooden mantle above the fireplace.

Standing in the quiet room, Daniel looked out the window at the main house lit up against the night sky. For three years, he had been running from his instincts, drowning them in cheap whiskey beneath a bridge. Now, those same instincts were the only thing keeping an innocent family alive.
