Chapter 10 - Retaliation

The heavy glass doors of the First National Trust downtown opened with a soft chime at exactly 9:00 AM the next morning. Claire and Daniel walked side by side into the opulent marble lobby, their footsteps muffled by thick Persian rugs. Daniel was sweating visibly, his tie slightly crooked, his eyes darting toward every security guard and bank teller as if expecting his mother to materialize out of thin air. They approached the private VIP client services desk, where an elderly, impeccably dressed bank officer named Mr. Henderson looked up with a polite, practiced smile. 'Good morning, Mr. Bennett, Mrs. Bennett. How may I assist your family's portfolio today?' Daniel swallowed hard, clearing his throat. 'We need emergency access to the Horizon Trust safe deposit box, vault level three. Master credential override.' Henderson's smile faltered slightly. 'Master override, sir? That typically requires direct biometric sign-off from Mrs. Margaret Vance.'
'My father's estate provisions grant primary beneficiary override in the event of federal subpoena compliance or court-mandated audit,' Daniel said, reading directly from the script Claire had drilled into him during their drive downtown. He slid the legal notice Arthur had helped draft across the mahogany counter. Henderson adjusted his glasses, scanning the document with practiced scrutiny. After what felt like an eternity, the officer nodded slowly. 'Very well, sir. Follow me to the private viewing vault.' They descended in a private elevator lined with polished brass, the heavy cables humming beneath their feet. When the doors slid open, they entered a subterranean chamber of steel doors and absolute silence. Henderson inserted his master key into Box 412, and Daniel entered the digital override sequence Claire had provided. With a heavy, satisfying mechanical clunk, the massive stainless steel drawer slid outward.
Claire stepped forward, her heart pounding. Inside the box sat a thick stack of archival leather folders, old cassette tapes labeled with dates from twenty years ago, and a velvet jewelry box. Claire reached in, pulling out the top folder labeled *Jenkins, S. - Settlement & Relocation.* She flipped it open. Inside weren't just financial payouts; they were signed affidavits admitting to corporate embezzlement, coercion, and a cover-up involving local law enforcement. But before she could examine the cassette tapes, a piercing alarm shrieked through the vault. The security lights overhead flashed from calm white to aggressive crimson. Henderson spun around, his face draining of color. 'That's the master security alert linked directly to Mrs. Vance's private terminal! Someone has triggered a remote breach notification!' Suddenly, the heavy steel vault doors at the end of the corridor began to close with a mechanical slam. 'Run!' Claire shouted, grabbing the leather folder and sprinting toward the exit just as the heavy doors locked shut behind them, trapping them inside the subterranean vault with a mountain of incriminating evidence and no way out.
