Chapter 11 - The Witness Who Wasn't There

The crimson alarm lights pulsed rhythmically against the cold steel walls of the subterranean vault, casting long, eerie shadows across rows of locked safety deposit boxes. Mr. Henderson was frantically tapping at the emergency intercom console near the heavy vault door, his voice laced with panic. 'Control room, this is Henderson! Vault level three is sealed on remote override! Open the damn doors!' A harsh, automated static hissed from the speaker before a calm, chillingly familiar voice cut through the noise. It wasn't a security guard. It was Margaret Vance. 'Mr. Henderson, you are speaking on an unauthorized secure line,' Margaret's voice resonated through the vault intercom with terrifying clarity. 'Please step away from Daniel and Claire immediately. Security personnel are descending via the service stairwell right now.'

Daniel slammed his fist against the reinforced steel door, shouting at the speaker. 'Mom! Open this door! I know what's in these files! I know what you did to Sarah Jenkins!' A heavy silence hung over the intercom for three agonizing seconds before Margaret replied, her tone dropping all pretense of maternal warmth into pure, glacial ice. 'You always were a disappointment, Daniel. Just like your father, you lack the stomach for legacy.' Footsteps echoed heavily on the concrete stairs outside the vault door, followed by the metallic clink of heavy keys and electronic keypads. Claire didn't panic. While Daniel was screaming at the door, she rapidly emptied the contents of the leather folder into her oversized tote bag, grabbing the old cassette tapes and a small flash drive she found tucked beneath the velvet tray. 'Daniel, stop shouting at a speaker,' Claire said sharply, grabbing his arm. 'Look around. There's always a secondary service hatch in these old bank vaults.'

Henderson, shaking with fear, pointed a trembling finger toward the back corner of the chamber behind a stack of utility shelving. 'The... the HVAC maintenance shaft. It leads up to the alley behind the parking garage. But it's restricted—' 'We don't have time for protocol,' Claire interrupted, shoving the shelving aside with a crash of metal. Behind it was a narrow square metal panel secured by four rusted bolts. Claire grabbed a heavy wrench from Henderson's emergency tool kit and began hammering at the bolts with desperate strength. The heavy metal clattered to the floor just as the main vault door clicked, hissed, and began to swing open. 'Go, go, go!' Claire shoved Daniel into the dark, dusty ventilation shaft just as two private security guards in dark suits burst into the vault. Claire scrambled in right behind them, pulling the metal hatch shut and jamming the wrench through the latch handles from the inside as heavy fists pounded frantically against the other side of the metal door.
