Chapter 13 - The Second Hole

The audio recording from the micro-cassette played through the speakers with chilling clarity, filling Arthur's office with the ghostly echoes of a crime committed twenty years ago. Sarah Jenkins' voice—begging to see her child, pleading for her life—was cut short by Margaret's icy assurance that she would never see the light of day again if she didn't sign away her parental rights. Daniel sat in the corner of the room, his head bowed in absolute horror, listening to his mother engineer a tragedy identical to the one she had just tried to orchestrate against Claire and Lily. 'She did the exact same thing to Sarah,' Daniel whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. 'She trapped her in a legal and financial cage until she broke.' Arthur stopped the recording, leaning back in his leather chair with a grave expression. 'With this audio, plus the financial records and the landscaping affidavits, we have enough to issue immediate federal arrest warrants for conspiracy, extortion, and historical kidnapping.'
Suddenly, the lights in Arthur's office flickered violently and died. The computer monitors went black. Silence fell over the room, broken only by the hum of the city traffic outside. 'That's odd,' Arthur muttered, standing up and walking toward the window that overlooked the street below. 'The power grid doesn't just fail in this district.' Claire felt a cold prickle of dread sweep across the back of her neck. She grabbed her tote bag, her hand sliding instinctively inside to grip her phone. 'Arthur, get away from the window,' she warned. Before Arthur could move, the heavy glass of the office window shattered inward in a shower of glittering shards. A loud, concussive flash-bang grenade rolled across the carpet, detonating with a blinding white light and a deafening roar that shook the walls. Smoke filled the room instantly, smelling of sulfur and burnt plastic.
Through the swirling haze of smoke, heavy footsteps pounded up the exterior fire escape stairs. Door kicked open. Three men in tactical black gear, wearing unbadged uniforms and carrying professional restraint equipment, swarmed into the room. Arthur shouted, lunging forward to protect the computer tower, but one of the intruders struck him across the temple with the butt of a heavy flashlight, sending the elderly journalist crashing unconscious to the floor. Daniel froze in terror, paralyzed by shock. Claire didn't hesitate. She grabbed a heavy ceramic lamp from Arthur's desk and hurled it with all her strength at the nearest operative, catching him square in the chest just as he lunged toward her. She turned and sprinted toward the back utility hallway, clutching the evidence drive against her chest as heavy boots pursued her through the smoke-filled corridor.
