Chapter 15 - The Ultimatum

The red laser sight of Rachel's firearm traced a steady, glowing line across the front of Claire's jacket. The absolute silence of the abandoned library basement felt heavy, suffocating. Rachel stepped further into the room, her designer heels clicking softly against the dusty tile floor. 'You really don't know when to quit, do you, Claire?' Rachel's voice was calm, conversational, almost chillingly polite. 'For a woman with so much to lose, you have a remarkably suicidal dedication to digging up graves that were meant to stay buried.' Claire didn't flinch. She kept one hand resting casually near the edge of the research terminal, her fingers hovering inches away from the physical power button that would abort the background upload currently sitting at ninety-two percent. 'You were never Daniel's associate, were you, Rachel?' Claire said, her voice steady and clear. 'Margaret didn't hire you out of a corporate law firm. She recruited you from her private estate trust ten years ago to be the next generation of her clean-up crew.'

Rachel's smile flickered for a fraction of a second, revealing a flash of genuine surprise before hardening back into glass. 'Margaret has vision, Claire. She understands that empires require maintenance. People like you—emotional, impulsive, bound by petty moral constraints—are liabilities to that vision.' Rachel raised the firearm slightly, aiming it dead center at Claire's chest. 'Now, step away from the terminal. Take the flash drive out, and hand it to me. If you do that, I'll ensure Margaret allows you supervised visits with Lily twice a month. You can live out your pathetic little life in a quiet suburb, far away from our world.' Claire stared at her, feeling a profound wave of disgust wash over her. 'And if I don't?' Rachel's eyes narrowed. 'Then your daughter grows up believing her mother abandoned her in a hole, just like Sarah Jenkins' child did twenty years ago.'

At ninety-eight percent. Ninety-nine percent. One hundred percent. *Upload Complete.* A small notification chime pinged softly from the computer terminal speaker. Rachel's head snapped toward the monitor. Her face drained of color as she realized what had just happened. With a primal burst of adrenaline, Claire grabbed the heavy computer monitor and hurled it directly at Rachel's head. Rachel dodged to the side, the heavy glass smashing against the floor, but the distraction was all Claire needed. She dove beneath the research table, kicked open the weak wooden side panel, and bolted toward the emergency exit stairs at the back of the basement, leaving Rachel screaming in fury as sirens began to wail outside the library doors.
