Chapter 13 - The Hostage Ultimatum

Ethan felt all the air leave his lungs, as if he had been dropped into an icy lake. The noise of the city traffic faded into a dull, terrifying buzz.
"Blake," Ethan whispered, his knuckles turning white around the phone. "Where is she? If you touch a single hair on her head, I swear to God—"
*"Shut up and listen, you little bastard!"* Blake snarled into the receiver. *"You took my job, you took my reputation, and you took my family. Now it's time for you to pay the bill."*
"She's ten years old, Blake!" Ethan pleaded, tears streaming down his face as he clutched Lily's pink backpack to his chest. "She has nothing to do with this! Take me instead! Let her go and take me!"
*"Oh, don't worry, Carter. You're going to be part of this,"* Blake laughed, a shrill, unhinged sound that made Ethan's blood run cold. *"Here are the terms. At the Hayes Global Tower, in Victor's private vault on the 50th floor, there is a bearer bond certificate worth twenty-five million dollars in corporate reserve funds. You have ninety minutes to get those bonds."*
"I don't have access to Victor's vault!" Ethan yelled. "I'm seventeen! I don't know the codes!"
*"Victor Hayes loves you like the son he never had,"* Blake hissed. *"You tell him your sister is sitting in a pool of freezing water with a gun to her head, and he'll open that vault in ten seconds flat. You bring the bonds alone to Warehouse 14 at Blackwood Harbor. No police. No security detail. If I see a single flashing light or hear a single siren within two miles of the docks... the girl goes into the river in a weighted burlap sack."*
"Blake, please—"
*"Ninety minutes, Carter. The clock started five seconds ago."*
The line went dead with a sharp click.
Ethan stood on the freezing sidewalk, his chest heaving with violent, ragged breaths. Panic clawed at his throat, threatening to paralyze him.
*Think, Ethan. Think!* his father's voice echoed in his memory. *When panic takes the wheel, you crash. Breathe and look at the board.*
Ethan forced his breathing to slow. He wiped the tears from his eyes with his sleeve and ran back to Marianne's SUV. He threw Lily's backpack onto the passenger seat, slammed the door, and dialed Marianne's direct private number.
Marianne answered on the second ring. "Ethan? Are you with Lily? The ribbon-cutting ceremony starts in forty minutes—"
"Marianne, lock down the building," Ethan said, his voice deadly quiet and razor-sharp. "Blake took Lily."
A horrified gasp came through the speaker. "What?!"
"Blake has her at Warehouse 14 in Blackwood Harbor," Ethan continued, putting the SUV into gear and tearing away from the curb. "He's working with someone from Vance's syndicate. They want twenty-five million in bearer bonds from Victor's private safe."
"I'm calling the FBI SWAT division right now—"
"NO!" Ethan shouted. "Blake said if he sees police near the docks, he'll drown her immediately! You can't send sirens, Marianne! You can't!"
"Ethan, you cannot walk into a trap alone!" Marianne insisted, her voice breaking with panic. "They will take the bonds and kill both of you!"
"I'm not walking in empty-handed," Ethan said, his eyes locking onto the road ahead as a plan began to form in his mind. "Tell Victor to meet me at the 5th Street side entrance of the tower in five minutes. And Marianne... call Rosa at the café. Tell her we need the delivery truck, the industrial grease barrels, and every contact she has in South Ironworks."
"What are you planning to do, Ethan?"
Ethan looked down at the gold star sticker on Lily's math quiz resting on the console.

"I'm going to finish what Blake started on Friday night," Ethan said.
