Chapter 24 - The Trial of the Century

At 9:30 AM on Monday morning, the grand marble rotunda of the Silverwood County Courthouse was packed beyond legal capacity.
Over two thousand citizens had braved the blizzard to pack the hallways, holding candles, signs, and thermos mugs of hot coffee. Outside, television news helicopters circled overhead in the grey sky, broadcasting the high-stakes real estate liquidation auction live to millions of viewers.
Inside Courtroom 4A, Judge Eleanor Vance (no relation to Arthur, but a famously impartial and formidable jurist with forty years on the bench) banged her heavy oak gavel against the sound block with three sharp, thunderous strikes.
"This court is now in session for the commercial asset liquidation of Hayes Foundation Holding 104," Judge Vance announced. "The starting minimum reserve bid is set at fifteen million dollars in certified liquid funds. The court recognizes the primary institutional bidder, Preston Cole of Cole Asset Management."
Preston Cole stood up, wearing an arrogant smirk and a four-thousand-dollar Italian suit. He placed a certified cashier's check on the clerk's table. "Fifteen million dollars, Your Honor. Fully verified by the Bank of New York."
Judge Vance adjusted her spectacles. "The court notes the bid of fifteen million. Are there any competing qualified bids before the court executes the deed transfer?"
The courtroom held its collective breath.
The heavy double oak doors at the back of the courtroom swung open.
Ethan Carter walked down the center aisle. He wore his simple dark suit, his head held high, walking with calm, unshakeable dignity. Walking right beside him was Sarah Carter, holding hands with little Lily, followed by Marianne Cole and Big Dave Kowalski carrying a heavy steel lockbox.
"The public foundation enters a competing bid, Your Honor," Ethan announced, his voice carrying clearly to every corner of the silent courtroom.
Preston Cole scoffed, turning around with a condescending sneer. "Your Honor, this boy is a minor and a frivolous publicity seeker. His internet stunt failed. He doesn't have the required capital."
Ethan opened the steel lockbox on the clerk's table.
"Inside this box is twelve million eight hundred and forty thousand dollars in certified public escrow drafts, raised from eight hundred and fifty thousand individual citizens," Ethan stated calmly.
"Which is two million one hundred and sixty thousand dollars short of the legal reserve!" Preston interrupted triumphantly. "The law requires fifteen million in full, Your Honor! Award the deed to my syndicate immediately!"
Judge Vance looked at Ethan with deep, genuine sorrow. "Mr. Carter... as deeply moved as this court is by the public support for your organization, the statutory reserve requirement is strictly binding by state corporate law. If your bid does not meet the fifteen-million-dollar threshold, I am legally obligated to accept Mr. Cole's offer."
Preston Cole's smile widened into a predatory grin. "Slam the gavel, Judge. It's over."
Judge Vance slowly raised her heavy wooden gavel into the air.
"Going once for fifteen million..."
"Going twice..."
"HOLD THE GAVEL, YOUR HONOR!"
A booming, unmistakable voice echoed from the rear of the courtroom.
The double doors opened once more.
Rolling into the courtroom in a motorized wheelchair, accompanied by the chief of cardiology from Memorial Hospital, was Victor Hayes.
He wore a tailored dark navy suit, an oxygen cannula in his nose, but his eyes were blazing with the fiery, indestructible spirit of a titan who had conquered every storm in his life.
"Victor!" Preston Cole gasped, stumbling back against the counsel table as if he had seen a ghost.
Victor rolled up to the bar, looked Preston directly in the eye with utter contempt, and placed a certified gold-embossed treasury draft on the judge's bench.
"Victor Hayes, Chairman of Hayes Global Holdings," Victor declared with absolute authority. "I am matching the public's twelve million dollars with an additional twenty million dollars from my personal, unencumbered family estate."
The entire courtroom erupted into a deafening roar of cheers and applause!
Judge Vance smiled, a broad, triumphant grin breaking across her stern face.
She brought her gavel down with an earth-shattering **BANG!**

"The bid is awarded to the Marcus Carter Public Trust for thirty-two million dollars!" Judge Vance ruled. "The deed is transferred in perpetuity. Court is adjourned!"
