Chapter 5 - The Archive Beneath the House

Daniel did not bring Rachel to Gloucester.

This time she agreed.

Barely.

“You stay with Emma.”

“I don't need a babysitter.”

“Emma needs company.”

“That's manipulation.”

“Yes.”

Rachel folded her arms.

“At least you're admitting it.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Victor may have access to decades of Moretti operations.”

“I understand.”

“If anything happens to me—”

Rachel's eyes sharpened.

“Don't.”

Daniel stopped.

She looked at him.

“You don't get to say goodbye before you're going somewhere dangerous.”

“Rachel.”

“No.”

He almost smiled.

“You're becoming difficult.”

“I learned from my husband.”

That word still affected him.

Husband.

Not arrangement.

Not contract.

Husband.

Daniel touched her cheek.

This time she did not flinch.

“Come back,” she whispered.

“I will.”

Two hours later, Daniel, Marco, and four trusted men entered the Gloucester property.

The house overlooked the Atlantic from a cliff.

Victor Hale was gone.

The basement archive was not.

Behind a wine cellar wall, Daniel found a steel door.

Sophia had provided the code.

Inside waited thirty years of secrets.

Ledgers.

Photos.

Recorded conversations.

Contracts.

Judges.

Union leaders.

Police commanders.

Smuggling routes.

Daniel stood beneath fluorescent lights staring at the history of his family.

Marco whistled softly.

“This could burn half the city.”

Daniel opened one drawer.

Files were missing.

“Victor took what mattered.”

A computer remained on the desk.

Marco's technician accessed it.

One folder had been opened recently.

MORETTI SUCCESSION.

Inside were documents from Daniel’s grandfather’s trust.

The marriage clause was highlighted.

Another file contained Rachel’s background.

School photos.

Employment records.

Tax returns.

Medical appointments.

Daniel's expression turned murderous.

“She was being watched before we met.”

Marco looked through the dates.

“Three months before Emma's accident.”

Daniel stopped.

That meant Rachel’s involvement had not been random.

Emma’s counterfeit monitor.

Rachel spotting the serial number.

Daniel meeting her.

Everything had possibly been engineered.

Marco opened another document.

PROJECT MORGAN.

Daniel felt cold.

The file outlined a plan.

Place counterfeit medical equipment at St. Catherine.

Ensure Rachel Morgan is assigned to procurement review.

Create contact between Rachel and Daniel Moretti.

Encourage protective relationship.

Marriage probability initially estimated at twelve percent.

Daniel stared.

“They predicted us.”

Marco said nothing.

The next section had been added later.

MARRIAGE OCCURRED. ACCELERATE PHASE TWO.

Daniel understood.

The marriage had not been the plan.

But once it happened, Victor adapted.

Make Rachel fear Daniel.

Make Daniel distrust Rachel.

Break the marriage.

If that failed—

Frame Rachel for criminal activity.

Then remove Daniel.

Marco opened the final file.

A photograph appeared.

Daniel entering a warehouse.

Timestamp next Thursday.

A future date.

Daniel stared.

“They're planning footage before it happens.”

Marco's face hardened.

“A setup.”

A second photo loaded.

Daniel lying on concrete.

Blood beneath him.

Rachel kneeling beside his body.

Text underneath:

FINAL NARRATIVE: WIFE DISCOVERS HUSBAND’S CRIMINAL ACTIVITY. DOMESTIC CONFLICT ESCALATES. DANIEL MORETTI KILLED. RACHEL MORETTI ARRESTED.

Marco whispered,

“They're going to kill you and blame her.”

Daniel looked at the projected date.

Four days.

His phone rang.

Rachel.

He answered immediately.

“Are you safe?”

A pause.

Then Rachel said,

“Daniel, Emma disappeared.”

His blood turned cold.

“What?”

“She went downstairs for coffee fifteen minutes ago.”

“Where's security?”

“They found one guard unconscious.”

Daniel turned toward Marco.

“We're leaving.”

Rachel continued.

“There’s something else.”

“What?”

“A package came.”

“Don't touch it.”

“I already opened it.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Rachel.”

“There was a phone inside.”

“Turn it off.”

“It rang.”

His stomach tightened.

“What did they say?”

Rachel’s voice shook.

“They said if I want Emma alive, I have to leave the penthouse alone.”

Daniel gripped the phone.

“No.”

“They said you would say that.”

“Rachel, listen to me.”

“Daniel—”

“You do not leave.”

“What if they hurt her?”

“They need you.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I found their plan.”

Silence.

“What plan?”

Daniel looked at the files.

“They're going to kill me and frame you.”

Rachel stopped breathing.

“They've been planning everything.”

“Since when?”

“Before Emma’s accident.”

Rachel struggled to process it.

Daniel continued.

“You were chosen.”

“For what?”

“To get close to me.”

“That doesn't make sense. I didn't know you.”

“They arranged the equipment.”

Rachel’s voice broke.

“So Emma almost died because they wanted me to meet you?”

“Yes.”

Rachel sat down.

The horror of it landed slowly.

Emma.

Dennis.

Celeste.

The bruises.

All pieces.

Daniel said,

“I’m coming back.”

Then another voice entered Rachel’s end of the call.

Male.

Close.

“Don't bother.”

Daniel froze.

“Rachel?”

A man laughed softly.

Rachel gasped.

The phone hit something.

Then Victor Hale spoke clearly.

“Hello, Daniel.”

Daniel's world narrowed.

“If you touch her—”

“You always start with threats.”

“Where is my wife?”

“Exactly where I need her.”

Rachel’s voice sounded in the background.

“Daniel, don't—”

The call cut.

Daniel stared at his phone.

Marco already moved.

“Track?”

“Working.”

Daniel looked around the archive.

Then understood.

Victor wanted him angry.

Predictable.

He closed his eyes.

Rachel's voice from the night of the bruises returned.

Find the truth first.

Daniel opened his eyes.

“Marco.”

“Yes?”

“Victor believes I'll come after him.”

“You will.”

“Yes.”

May you like

Daniel looked at the evidence.

“But not the way he expects.”
