Chapter 6 - Rachel Refused to Be Bait

Rachel woke inside a moving vehicle.

Her hands were bound in front.

Not tightly.

Victor wanted her conscious.

That worried her more.

Emma sat opposite her.

Her mouth was taped.

Her eyes widened when Rachel moved.

Rachel looked around.

Cargo van.

No windows.

One armed man beside the rear doors.

Victor sat near the partition wearing a gray suit.

Sixty-one.

Silver hair.

The kind of face that belonged behind charitable podiums.

“You're awake.”

Rachel ignored him.

She leaned toward Emma.

“You okay?”

Emma nodded.

Victor smiled.

“How touching.”

Rachel looked at him.

“You built the hospital scheme.”

“Yes.”

“You almost killed Emma.”

“No.”

Emma glared.

Victor continued.

“The counterfeit monitor was never meant to reach her.”

Rachel remembered the timing.

“You expected me to stop it.”

“Yes.”

“What if I hadn't?”

Victor shrugged.

“Then plans change.”

Rachel stared.

People like Victor frightened her differently than Daniel.

Daniel could be violent.

But Daniel felt things.

Victor treated people like variables.

“You wanted Daniel to notice me.”

“We needed somebody he would underestimate.”

“You chose the wrong woman.”

Victor laughed.

“I know.”

Rachel looked at Emma.

“Why kidnap her?”

“To motivate you.”

“For what?”

“You're going to kill your husband.”

Rachel almost laughed.

“No.”

“Not literally.”

Victor leaned forward.

“We already have the footage.”

Deepfake.

“Your job is to make the story believable.”

“How?”

“You'll call Daniel.”

“And?”

“Tell him you discovered evidence he murdered Dennis Cole.”

Rachel stared.

“Then ask him to meet you at Warehouse Twelve.”

“The place you're planning to kill him.”

Victor smiled.

“Very good.”

“And afterward, I'm blamed.”

“You understand quickly.”

Rachel leaned back.

“No.”

Victor looked amused.

“You think you have a choice?”

“Yes.”

He glanced toward Emma.

Rachel followed his eyes.

“You won't hurt her.”

Victor smiled.

“Why not?”

“Because she's your leverage.”

“Leverage can expire.”

“Not before Daniel arrives.”

Victor’s smile narrowed.

Rachel continued.

“And if you hurt either of us, Daniel stops negotiating.”

“You think you understand him.”

“I do.”

“Six weeks of marriage?”

“Yes.”

Victor leaned closer.

“Rachel, men like Daniel Moretti don't love women like you.”

The insult was familiar.

Curvy.

Ordinary.

Not polished enough.

Not born into money.

Six weeks earlier it would have landed.

Now Rachel almost smiled.

“That's the mistake all of you made.”

Victor frowned.

“You thought I needed Daniel to think I was beautiful.”

Her voice steadied.

“I don't.”

Victor’s expression cooled.

“You thought I needed this family to approve of me.”

Rachel looked at Emma.

“I don't.”

She looked back.

“And you thought Daniel only protects what he owns.”

Victor stared.

Rachel said,

“He protects what he loves.”

For the first time, uncertainty entered Victor's eyes.

The van stopped.

Rachel paid attention.

Three turns after highway noise ended.

Train horn nearby.

Smell of salt.

Probably industrial waterfront.

The rear doors opened.

Warehouse.

Rachel and Emma were moved inside.

Old brick.

High windows.

Yellow overhead lamps.

Rachel noticed a red fire pull station.

A forklift.

Three exits.

Four visible men.

Victor placed a phone before her.

“Call.”

Rachel looked at it.

“No.”

One guard grabbed Emma.

Rachel immediately said,

“Fine.”

Victor smiled.

Rachel picked up the phone.

Daniel answered on the first ring.

“Rachel.”

Just hearing him almost broke her.

She forced herself calm.

“I found something.”

Silence.

Daniel knew.

She could feel it.

“Tell me.”

Rachel looked at Victor.

He nodded.

“Dennis Cole.”

“What about him?”

“I think you killed him.”

Daniel remained silent for exactly two seconds.

Then,

“Do you?”

Rachel understood.

He knew she was being forced.

“Yes.”

Her voice shook.

Victor frowned.

Rachel continued,

“I have proof at Warehouse Twelve.”

Another pause.

“Which entrance?”

Victor's eyes sharpened.

Rachel remembered the plan.

She needed information without sounding obvious.

“The same one you used last winter.”

Daniel had never taken her to any warehouse.

Another signal.

Daniel answered,

“South entrance.”

Rachel nearly smiled.

He understood.

Victor mouthed: Tell him alone.

“Come alone.”

Daniel replied,

“I will.”

Rachel said,

“And Daniel?”

“Yes?”

She looked directly at Victor.

“I’m sorry I didn’t trust you about the blue dress.”

Victor frowned.

There had never been a blue dress.

Daniel said quietly,

“I know.”

Call ended.

Victor studied her.

“What blue dress?”

“Nothing.”

He slapped her.

Not hard enough to knock her down.

Enough to shock.

Emma made an angry sound through the tape.

Rachel tasted blood.

Victor leaned closer.

“Do not get clever.”

Rachel looked at him.

“You're scared.”

His expression changed.

“Of what?”

“Daniel.”

Victor laughed.

“Everyone is.”

“No.”

Rachel shook her head.

“You're scared because you spent months trying to make him predictable.”

She smiled through the pain.

“And I just reminded you he isn't.”

Thirty-eight minutes later, headlights appeared beyond the warehouse windows.

Victor's men moved.

Rachel's heartbeat rose.

A black SUV stopped outside.

Daniel emerged alone.

Exactly as ordered.

Victor smiled.

“Told you.”

Rachel looked toward Daniel.

Black coat.

Hands visible.

Walking toward the warehouse.

But something was wrong.

Too easy.

Daniel entered.

Victor aimed a gun.

“Welcome.”

Daniel looked first at Rachel.

His eyes stopped briefly on the red mark across her cheek.

His entire face changed.

Rachel shook her head subtly.

Not now.

Daniel saw.

He looked at Emma.

Then Victor.

“You wanted me.”

“Yes.”

“Let them go.”

“After we're done.”

Victor tossed documents onto a table.

Daniel looked.

Transfer papers.

Control of Moretti Freight.

Foundation voting rights.

Trust claims.

“You staged all this to steal a company?”

Victor laughed.

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“I staged it because your father stole mine.”

Daniel frowned.

Victor continued.

“My father built half the original shipping network. Lorenzo Moretti took credit and left him with debt.”

“This is revenge?”

“This is correction.”

Rachel watched Daniel carefully.

Victor wanted emotion.

Daniel gave him none.

“Sign.”

“No.”

Victor aimed the gun at Rachel.

Daniel's eyes shifted.

Victor smiled.

“There he is.”

Rachel realized Victor finally saw what he wanted.

Fear.

Daniel spoke slowly.

“If you shoot her, you lose everything.”

Victor cocked the gun.

“Sign.”

Daniel reached for the pen.

Rachel shouted,

“No!”

Victor turned toward her.

That was when every warehouse light died.

Darkness.

A fire alarm screamed.

Red emergency lights flashed.

Emma kicked the guard holding her.

Rachel dropped.

Gunfire cracked toward the ceiling.

Daniel moved.

A side door exploded inward.

Marco's team entered.

Chaos.

Rachel crawled toward Emma.

Daniel hit Victor hard enough to send the gun sliding beneath a table.

One guard surrendered.

Another ran.

Within twenty seconds, it was over.

Victor lay on the concrete.

Daniel stood above him.

Rage transformed his face.

Rachel saw the moment Daniel decided something.

She shouted,

“Daniel.”

He looked at her.

“Don't.”

Victor laughed from the floor.

“She thinks she controls you.”

Daniel stared down at him.

Then slowly stepped backward.

“No.”

He looked toward Rachel.

“She reminds me who I chose to become.”

Federal agents entered behind Marco.

Victor’s expression changed.

Not Moretti soldiers.

Federal agents.

Daniel had brought law enforcement.

Victor stared.

“You turned informant?”

Daniel answered,

“I brought evidence.”

Marco released Rachel's restraints.

She stood.

Daniel approached.

Then stopped before touching her.

Even now.

Even after believing he might lose her.

“Can I?”

Rachel's eyes filled.

She stepped into him before he finished.

Daniel wrapped both arms around her.

For several seconds nothing else mattered.

Then Rachel whispered against his chest,

“Emma.”

Daniel released her.

Emma was already hugging Marco, furious tears streaming down her face.

Rachel almost laughed.

They were alive.

Victor was arrested.

But as agents searched the building, one investigator approached Daniel.

“Mr. Moretti.”

“Yes?”

“We found something in Hale’s office.”

He handed Daniel a photograph.

Daniel looked.

His expression changed.

Rachel took it.

The image showed Victor Hale standing beside Daniel’s supposedly dead father.

The timestamp was only seven months old.

Rachel whispered,

“Daniel…”

He stared at the photograph.

Lorenzo Moretti had been dead nine years.

May you like

Except apparently he had not.

And suddenly every betrayal Daniel had uncovered looked like preparation for something much larger.
