Chapter 7 - The Father Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Daniel did not speak for most of the drive home.
Rachel sat beside him.
Emma occupied the second SUV with Marco.
The photograph remained in Daniel's hand.
Lorenzo Moretti.
Alive.
Older.
Thinner.
But unmistakable.
Rachel finally said,
“You don't have to pretend you're okay.”
“I’m not pretending.”
“Yes, you are.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You stop blinking when you're angry.”
Despite everything, that almost made him smile.
“You notice details.”
“I learned from someone irritating.”
He looked back at the photograph.
“My father died in Sicily.”
“Apparently not.”
“I identified the body.”
Rachel remained quiet.
Daniel frowned.
“No.”
“What?”
“I identified his ring.”
He searched his memory.
The coffin had been closed after a supposed boating accident.
Extensive burns.
Lorenzo’s signet ring had been recovered.
Daniel never saw the face.
Rachel understood.
“They wanted you to believe.”
“Yes.”
“Why disappear?”
Daniel looked toward Boston's skyline.
“My father hated succession.”
“What does that mean?”
“He believed nobody deserved power until they'd survived without protection.”
Rachel stared.
“That sounds healthy.”
Daniel gave her a tired look.
“He staged kidnappings as training exercises when Marco and I were teenagers.”
Rachel went completely still.
“He did what?”
“Different life.”
“That isn't an answer.”
“No.”
Daniel looked back at the photograph.
“If he's alive, Victor didn't create the plan.”
Rachel understood.
“Your father did.”
“Yes.”
The penthouse was searched before they entered.
Daniel refused to assume anything remained secure.
Sophia waited inside.
The moment she saw the photograph, she sat down.
“He's alive.”
Daniel watched her.
“You knew?”
“No.”
“Think carefully.”
“I buried my brother.”
“No. You buried someone.”
Sophia covered her mouth.
Tears appeared.
Rachel watched.
This reaction looked real.
Daniel placed the photograph down.
“What would Lorenzo want?”
Sophia answered without hesitation.
“You.”
Daniel frowned.
“Why?”
“You disappointed him.”
Rachel almost laughed at the insanity.
Daniel did not.
Sophia continued.
“When you took control, you legalized half the businesses.”
“I made them profitable.”
“You closed gambling operations. Drug routes. Collections.”
“Because they were poison.”
“Lorenzo believed you were destroying the family.”
Rachel asked,
“Then why not remove Daniel years ago?”
Sophia looked at her.
“Because Lorenzo always believed Daniel could be corrected.”
Daniel's expression became cold.
Sophia continued.
“Marriage changed things.”
“Why?”
“He hated emotional attachments.”
Rachel looked at Daniel.
Suddenly the plan became clear.
Not just inheritance.
Not only corporate control.
Lorenzo wanted Daniel to prove he would choose power over Rachel.
And every manufactured betrayal had been a test.
Bruises.
Fake footage.
Kidnapping.
Victor.
Daniel whispered,
“He wanted me to kill her.”
Rachel looked at him.
Sophia went pale.
Daniel understood completely now.
“Frame Rachel as a traitor. Give me evidence. See whether I destroy her.”
Rachel felt sick.
“If you did…”
“He'd know I was still his son.”
“And if you didn't?”
Daniel looked at the photograph.
“He removes me.”
Marco entered.
“We found Lorenzo.”
Daniel stood.
“Where?”
“Not exactly.”
“Marco.”
“We traced calls connected to Victor.”
He put a map onscreen.
One location appeared.
A private estate outside Newport, Rhode Island.
Sophia looked at it and whispered,
“The summer house.”
Daniel turned.
“You know it?”
“Lorenzo bought it under another name before you were born.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“I thought it had been sold.”
Marco said,
“Someone has spent eleven million renovating it over nine years.”
Daniel understood.
His father had built another fortress.
Rachel asked,
“What now?”
Daniel looked at her.
“We don't go.”
Everyone stared.
Marco raised an eyebrow.
Daniel continued.
“He expects me.”
Rachel slowly smiled.
“He expects you angry.”
“Yes.”
“What would he hate most?”
Daniel looked toward the files seized from Victor.
“Being exposed.”
Two days later, the first news broke.
Not tabloid gossip.
Federal indictments.
Victor Hale.
Halcyon Medical.
Counterfeit equipment.
Financial conspiracy.
Attempted murder.
Moretti executives were questioned.
Daniel voluntarily handed investigators decades of evidence from the Gloucester archive.
The city erupted.
Old allies called him a traitor.
Competitors smelled blood.
Rachel expected Daniel to regret it.
Instead he looked relieved.
Then came Lorenzo's response.
A package arrived.
Inside was a childhood photograph.
Daniel, age eight.
His father standing behind him.
On the back:
YOU WERE BORN TO RULE, NOT CONFESS.
Another item lay beneath it.
Rachel's wedding ring.
She looked at her hand.
Her ring was still there.
Daniel examined the duplicate.
Inside the band was an engraving.
12 MONTHS.
Rachel whispered,
“He wants us counting.”
Daniel crushed the note.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Daniel.”
Lorenzo's voice.
Daniel closed his eyes briefly.
Nine years disappeared.
“Father.”
Rachel watched his face.
Lorenzo laughed softly.
“You finally found me.”
“You wanted to be found.”
“Good.”
Daniel said nothing.
“You surprised me,” Lorenzo continued.
“How?”
“You didn't kill Victor.”
“He wasn't worth prison.”
“You brought federal agents.”
“Yes.”
“Your wife changed you.”
Daniel looked toward Rachel.
“No.”
Rachel raised an eyebrow.
Daniel continued,
“She reminded me I had a choice.”
Silence.
Then Lorenzo said,
“Bring her to Newport.”
“No.”
“Then I'll come to Boston.”
“You won't reach her.”
“You still think walls protect people.”
Daniel’s voice became quieter.
“You taught me they don't.”
Lorenzo paused.
For the first time, Daniel had unsettled him.
“Tomorrow. Midnight.”
“No.”
“You don't have a choice.”
Daniel almost smiled.
“You’re wrong.”
He ended the call.
Rachel stared.
“That was dramatic.”
“I practiced.”
She laughed unexpectedly.
Then Daniel's expression changed.
“What?”
Rachel followed his gaze.
The penthouse security monitor showed the private elevator rising.
No authorized keycard.
Marco reached for his gun.
Daniel moved in front of Rachel.
The elevator chimed.
Doors opened.
A young woman stepped out.
Twenty-three.
Dark hair.
Terrified.
She held a baby.
Marco aimed.
“Stop.”
The woman froze.
“Please.”
Daniel stared.
She looked familiar.
Too familiar.
Same eyes.
Same jaw.
Moretti eyes.
“Who are you?”
The woman began crying.
“My name is Olivia.”
Daniel said nothing.
She continued.
“Lorenzo Moretti is my father.”
Daniel's face emptied.
Rachel stared.
May you like
Olivia looked at Daniel.
“And that makes you my brother.”
