Chapter 8 - The Sister Lorenzo Hid

Olivia Moretti had spent her entire life believing Daniel was dangerous.

Lorenzo made sure of it.

“He said you murdered people who challenged you.”

Daniel sat across from her.

“Sometimes.”

Rachel kicked his ankle.

Daniel glanced at her.

“What?”

“She is terrified.”

“I answered honestly.”

Olivia stared between them.

Rachel sighed.

“He's improving.”

The baby slept against Olivia's chest.

Six months old.

A little boy named Noah.

Daniel looked at him.

“Why did you come here?”

Olivia swallowed.

“Because my father wants Noah.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Why?”

“He says Noah is his second chance.”

Rachel felt cold.

Olivia continued.

“Dad raised me at the Newport house. Tutors. Guards. Almost no friends.”

“Your mother?”

“Died when I was seven.”

Daniel looked toward Sophia.

His aunt sat nearby, stunned.

“Who was she?”

“Elena Vargas.”

Sophia inhaled sharply.

Daniel noticed.

“You knew her.”

Sophia looked ashamed.

“She worked for Lorenzo.”

Daniel's face hardened.

“How long?”

“Years.”

“And nobody told me I had a sister.”

“I didn’t know.”

Olivia interrupted.

“Dad said you did.”

Daniel looked at her.

“He told me you knew about me and wanted me hidden because I was illegitimate.”

“That is a lie.”

Olivia searched his face.

“He said you'd kill Noah if you found us.”

Rachel looked at the sleeping infant.

Lorenzo's pattern never changed.

Separate people.

Feed them fear.

Make them believe Daniel was the monster.

Then use Daniel's reputation as a weapon.

Rachel said,

“Why run now?”

Olivia’s eyes filled.

“Because he wants Noah raised the way he raised Daniel.”

Daniel went still.

Olivia continued.

“He said love makes boys weak.”

Rachel saw Daniel's jaw tighten.

“He wanted me to stop holding Noah when he cried.”

Daniel stared.

“He's six months old.”

“I know.”

“He told you not to hold a six-month-old baby?”

Olivia nodded.

“That was when I realized every story he told me might be wrong.”

Daniel looked away.

Rachel understood what he was thinking.

Lorenzo had done the same things to him.

Maybe not exactly.

But the philosophy had been identical.

Pain builds strength.

Fear creates obedience.

Love creates weakness.

Daniel looked toward Olivia.

“You stay here.”

She flinched.

He immediately corrected himself.

“If you want.”

Rachel almost smiled.

Progress.

Olivia whispered,

“I don't know where else to go.”

Daniel nodded.

“Then you're safe.”

That evening, they learned why Lorenzo wanted Noah.

The Moretti family trust contained another clause.

If Daniel's marriage ended before twelve months and Daniel had no biological heirs, voting control could pass through Lorenzo’s surviving descendants.

Olivia.

Then Noah.

Lorenzo did not need Daniel dead immediately.

He needed Daniel disqualified.

Rachel divorced.

Olivia controlled.

Noah eventually shaped into the heir Lorenzo wanted.

Rachel read the document twice.

“This man turned a family tree into military strategy.”

Daniel answered,

“He never understood family.”

Rachel looked at him.

“You do now.”

Daniel said nothing.

At 9:40 p.m., Noah began crying.

Olivia stood automatically.

Daniel watched.

She lifted the baby.

Rocked him.

Whispered.

Noah calmed.

Olivia noticed Daniel looking and stiffened.

“Sorry.”

Daniel frowned.

“For what?”

“He hated when I picked him up too quickly.”

Daniel’s face darkened.

Rachel stepped closer.

“Daniel.”

He looked at her.

She knew that expression.

He was seeing himself as a child.

Daniel walked toward Olivia.

Then stopped.

“May I?”

Olivia hesitated.

Then handed him Noah.

Daniel Moretti had negotiated with armed men.

Survived assassinations.

Controlled hundreds of employees.

A six-month-old baby terrified him.

He held Noah too stiffly.

Rachel laughed.

Daniel glared.

“This isn't funny.”

“It is a little.”

Noah blinked up at him.

Daniel adjusted awkwardly.

The baby grabbed Daniel’s shirt.

Something changed in Daniel's face.

Olivia watched.

“My father said you hated children.”

Daniel whispered,

“My father says many things.”

Noah yawned.

Rachel's chest tightened.

This was what Lorenzo feared.

Not weakness.

Attachment.

People Daniel would choose over power.

The next morning Lorenzo sent instructions.

A video.

He stood inside the Newport estate.

Older.

Silver hair.

Still powerful.

Behind him hung portraits of generations of Morettis.

“I know Olivia is with you.”

Daniel watched with Rachel.

Lorenzo continued.

“Return my daughter and grandson.”

Olivia whispered,

“No.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You heard her.”

Lorenzo obviously had not.

The recording continued.

“Bring Rachel as well.”

Daniel's hand tightened.

“At midnight tomorrow, I will release every file connecting you to crimes committed before your reforms.”

Rachel frowned.

“He already has the archive.”

Marco shook his head.

“Apparently not everything.”

Lorenzo smiled into the camera.

“You wanted truth, son. Come collect it.”

Video ended.

Rachel said,

“He wants us at Newport.”

Daniel nodded.

“So we don't go.”

Rachel surprised him.

“We do.”

“No.”

“Daniel.”

“No.”

She folded her arms.

“Excellent marriage communication.”

“This isn't negotiation.”

“That sounds like old Daniel.”

He stared.

Rachel continued.

“He has evidence that could destroy everything you're trying to rebuild.”

“I don't care about the company.”

“Neither do I.”

She stepped closer.

“I care about the employees who aren't criminals. I care about patients affected by Halcyon. I care about Olivia living the rest of her life looking over her shoulder.”

Daniel looked toward his sister.

Olivia whispered,

“I want this finished.”

Daniel hated both of them for making sense.

Rachel touched his arm.

“But we don't go his way.”

Daniel looked at her.

A slow realization formed.

“What are you suggesting?”

Rachel smiled.

“The first time somebody used your name against me, I believed them because I didn't know you.”

She looked toward the Newport video.

“Lorenzo's entire strategy depends on controlling what everyone believes.”

Daniel understood.

“So we remove the secret.”

May you like

Rachel nodded.

“We make everything public.”
