Chapter 5 - A Bitter Confrontation

The Chicago docks were freezing, the wind howling off Lake Michigan like a wounded animal. Heavy shipping
containers were stacked like giant legos, casting long, dark shadows across the concrete.
Vincent walked down the pier, flanked by Dominic and three of his heavy-hitting enforcers. At the end of the
dock stood Marcus Ellison, a wealthy, corrupt businessman who had used Vincent's mafia connections to build his
shipping empire. Next to him was Brooke, wrapped in her mink coat, looking nervous.
"Vincent!" Marcus called out, putting on a warm, jovial smile that didn't reach his eyes. "Good of you to come. I
know you've had a... busy night at the hospital."
Vincent stopped a few feet away, his hands buried in the pockets of his long black coat. He didn't offer a
handshake. "What's the emergency, Marcus?"
"The union workers are threatening to strike again," Marcus said, gesturing toward the dark water. "They're
demanding safety audits. I need your boys to... persuade them to get back to work. We have a massive shipment
arriving from Montreal tomorrow, and we can't afford delays."
Vincent stood perfectly still, letting the silence stretch between them until Marcus's smile began to falter.
"The Montreal shipment," Vincent said slowly. "The one carrying three hundred kilograms of untaxed
pharmaceutical chemicals?"
Marcus stiffened, his eyes darting to Brooke. "Vincent, we don't discuss details on the open dock."
"I do," Vincent said. He took a step forward, his massive shadow completely engulfing the older man. "Because
that shipment is registered under a shell company called Ellison Logistics. A company that I fund. And a company
that, as of twenty minutes ago, has had its shipping license suspended by the federal port authority."
Marcus gasped, his face turning pale. "What? That's impossible! I have the commissioner in my pocket!"
"You did," Vincent corrected coldly. "Until I bought his debt from the casino in Atlantic City. He works for me
now, Marcus. Not you. Your assets are being frozen as we speak. Your warehouses are being raided by IRS CID
agents. You are ruined."
"Vincent!" Brooke screamed, stepping forward and grabbing his arm. "Why are you doing this? Over her? Over
that traitorous little rat in the hospital? She lied to you! She was going to put you in prison!"
Vincent slowly turned his gaze to Brooke. He reached down and gripped her wrist, squeezing just tightly
enough to make her gasp in pain and drop to her knees.
"The only person who lied to me was you, Brooke," Vincent whispered, his voice like dry leaves scraping over
stone. "I know about the forged bank statements. I know you paid off an IT specialist to clone Emma's phone. You
wanted her gone because she was the only thing in my life that you couldn't buy."
"No... Vincent, please, I did it for us!" Brooke cried, tears streaming down her face, ruining her perfect makeup.
"She was weak! She didn't belong in your world! I can give you everything you need!"
"You gave me a lie that almost killed my son," Vincent growled, casting her hand away in disgust. He turned to
his men. "Take them both. Put them in the basement of the old meatpacking plant. I don't want them dead yet. I
want them to watch from a dark room as every single penny they ever stole, earned, or inherited is stripped away."
"Vincent, you can't do this!" Marcus yelled as two large enforcers grabbed him by the arms, dragging him
toward a waiting black SUV. "I have friends! I have connections!"
"I am your only connection, Marcus," Vincent said, turning his back on them. "And I just cut the wire."
As the SUVs sped away into the dark Chicago night, Vincent stood on the dock, looking out over the black,
churning water. The revenge felt hollow. It didn't cure the burning guilt in his chest. It didn't wake Emma up.

"Let's get back to the hospital, Dominic," Vincent said, his voice flat and exhausted. "That's where my real trial
begins."
