Chapter 9 - A House Becomes a Home

A week later, the doors to the private elevator opened directly into the penthouse suite of the Kane Estate. The
penthouse was a massive, two-story luxury apartment overlooking the Chicago skyline, but today, it felt warmer,
softer, and more alive than it ever had.
Vincent carried Emma through the threshold, refusing to let her walk even though she insisted she was strong
enough.
"Vincent, put me down," Emma laughed, her face blushing pink. "The doctors said I can walk."
"The doctors don't know how stubborn you are," Vincent replied with a soft smile, gently placing her onto the
plush velvet sofa in the living room.
Dominic followed them, carrying baby Leo in a portable car seat. He set the seat down gently on the coffee
table and unbuckled the baby, who let out a little stretch and opened his bright, dark eyes, looking around the room.
"Welcome home, Emma," Dominic smiled. "I'll leave you guys to settle in. If you need anything, I'll be
downstairs."
"Thank you, Dominic. For everything," Emma said sincerely.
As Dominic left, Vincent sat next to Emma, his arm sliding around her shoulders, pulling her close. She rested
her head on his chest, listening to the steady, comforting beat of his heart.
"It's beautiful, Vincent," Emma said, looking around. The room was decorated with large vases of fresh white
jasmine, and a fire crackled warmly in the fireplace. "It's different from how I remember it. It feels... like a home
now. Not just a fortress."
"Because you're here," Vincent said softly. "Without you, this place was just a gilded cage. I spent eight months
sitting in this room, drinking myself to sleep, trying to hate you because it was easier than admitting I had
destroyed the only beautiful thing I ever had."
Emma looked up at him, her eyes soft with forgiveness. "We both made mistakes, Vincent. We let people get
between us. But we survived. Leo survived."
"I have something to show you," Vincent said, standing up and reaching out his hand.
He guided her down the hallway to the door right next to the master bedroom. He pushed it open, revealing a
breathtaking nursery. The walls were painted a soft, warm cream color. A beautiful white crib sat in the center,
underneath a hand-painted mural of a forest under a starry night sky. The shelves were filled with soft toys, books,
and tiny clothes.
"Oh, Vincent..." Emma gasped, her hand flying to her mouth as tears welled up in her eyes. "It's perfect."
"I wanted him to have the best of everything," Vincent said, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind,
resting his chin on his shoulder. "But most of all, I wanted him to have a father who is worthy of him. I'm stepping
down, Emma."
Emma turned around in his arms, her eyes wide with shock. "What?"
"I'm handing the day-to-day operations of the family over to Dominic," Vincent explained, his voice filled with
a quiet, absolute resolve. "I will still hold the assets, but I am out of the streets. No more smuggling, no more turf
wars. I'm transitioning our businesses entirely into legitimate real estate and logistics. I don't want my son growing
up fearing the sound of sirens, or wondering if his father is going to come home in a casket."
Emma stared at him, seeing the profound change in the man she loved. He had let go of his pride, his anger, and
his throne—all to keep them safe.
"I love you, Vincent," she whispered, reaching up to cup his jaw.
"I love you more than my own life, Emma," Vincent replied, leaning down to seal his promise with a deep,

passionate kiss.
