Chapter 6 - The Awakening

The steady, rhythmic beep of the heart monitor was the first thing Emma heard. It was a sterile, mechanical sound
that made her head throb with a dull, persistent ache. She tried to open her eyes, but her eyelids felt like they had
been glued shut. Her throat was bone-dry, burning with every breath she took.
"Emma?"
A voice called out her name. It was a voice she would recognize anywhere—a voice that had haunted her
dreams for eight long, agonizing months. It was a deep, gravelly baritone, but right now, it sounded cracked,
desperate, and incredibly tired.
Emma slowly blinked her eyes open, squinting against the harsh, white fluorescent lights of the ICU. As her
vision cleared, she saw him.
Vincent.
He was sitting in a chair pulled up right against the side of her bed. He looked terrible. The usually immaculate
mafia boss had dark circles under his eyes, a rough stubble covering his jaw, and his hair was messy. He was still
wearing the same white shirt, but it was wrinkled and stained with sweat and faded dark spots. He was holding her
hand between both of his large, warm palms, pressing it against his cheek.
As soon as she realized who it was, fear spiked through her veins. Emma gasped, trying to pull her hand away,
but she was too weak. Her heart rate monitor began to beep rapidly.
"No... please," she whispered, her voice barely a raspy breath. "Don't... don't hurt me. I didn't do it, Vincent. I
swear... I never told anyone anything."
The sheer terror in her eyes broke Vincent. He let go of her hand slowly, raising his palms in a gesture of
surrender, stepping back a few inches to give her space.
"Emma, shh, it's okay," Vincent said, his voice thick with a raw, painful emotion. "I know. I know you didn't do
it. I know the truth now. You're safe. Nobody is going to hurt you ever again."
Emma stared at him, her chest rising and falling rapidly. "You... you know?"
"I know Brooke set you up. I know she forged those documents," Vincent said, taking a shaky breath. "I was a
fool, Emma. I let my pride and my fear of being betrayed blind me to the only real thing I had in my life. I threw
you away, and I left you to suffer. I will spend the rest of my life begging for your forgiveness."
Emma looked away, tears of exhaustion and relief spilling over her eyelashes and running down her pale
cheeks. "I was so scared, Vincent. I had no money. I had nowhere to go. I thought... I thought you were going to
have me killed."
"Never," Vincent choked out, falling to his knees beside her bed, his head resting against the mattress near her
hip. "I could never hurt you, Emma. I've been a dead man walking since the day I left you."
Suddenly, Emma's eyes widened as she remembered. She gasped, her hand flying to her flat stomach. "The
baby... Vincent, where is my baby? Is he... did he die?"
Vincent quickly reached up, gently capturing her hands to calm her down. "He's alive, Emma. He's alive and
he's strong. He was born a bit early, but he's in the NICU right now. He's a fighter, just like his mother."
Emma let out a broken sob, her shoulders shaking. "He's alive... Oh thank God, he's alive. Can I see him?"
"He's in an incubator, but as soon as the doctors say it's safe, I will have him brought right here to your arms,"
Vincent promised, kissing her forehead gently. "For now, you need to rest. You lost a lot of blood."
May you like
Emma closed her eyes, the sheer exhaustion washing over her again. But as she began to drift back to sleep, she
realized Vincent hadn't let go of her hand. And for the first time in eight months, she didn't feel completely alone.
