Chapter 13 - The Echoes of the Past

With Viktor Vance's hostile syndicate dismantled and federal investigators moving swiftly to freeze his offshore assets, the financial district of Boston finally settled into an era of undisputed Mercer hegemony.
That evening, after the trading bell rang and the markets closed, I decided to take a quiet walk through the old neighborhood of Dorchester where I had spent ten grueling years raising Lily in a cramped, drafty second-floor apartment.
I parked the black Maybach a few blocks away and walked down the familiar, narrow sidewalk. The autumn wind rustled through the maple trees, and the faint smell of woodsmoke and baking bread filled the crisp evening air.

"Mom?"
I turned around to see Lily and Daniel walking up behind me, having followed quietly in a separate car. Lily smiled softly, wrapping her arms gently around my waist, resting her pregnant belly against my side.
"You miss it, don't you?" Lily whispered, looking up at the old storefront.
I shook my head slowly, a gentle smile touching my lips as I looked at my daughter. "No, my sweet girl. I don't miss the cold winters, the sleepless nights, or the constant terror of wondering if we would have enough money for groceries the next week."

"Then why come back here?" Daniel asked respectfully, standing beside us with his hands in his coat pockets.
"To remind myself where the strength came from," I answered softly, reaching out to touch the weathered brick wall. "Power and wealth are temporary garments, Daniel. They can be tailored, altered, or torn away in a single night. But the character forged in the struggle—that is the only fabric that never wears out."
