Chapter 13 - Behind Closed Doors

Inside the high-vaulted chambers of Federal Judge Eleanor Vance, the atmosphere was suffocating. Two FBI special agents stood near the heavy oak doors, while corporate lawyers for Helix sat across the long conference table from Mara Whitlow, Daniel, and Evelyn.
"This is an outrage, Your Honor!" Helix’s lead attorney shouted, slamming his hand on the wood. "Mr. Pierce is an indicted felon under federal warrant! He should be in handcuffs right now, not holding court in your chambers!"
"Sit down, Counsel," Judge Vance snapped, her cold blue eyes fixing on the lawyer. "Mr. Pierce surrendered himself voluntarily on my courthouse steps in front of fifty news cameras. He has invoked Federal Whistleblower Protection under Title 18. I will hear his proffer."
Mara Whitlow stepped forward, plugging the metal flash drive into the court's secure diagnostic terminal.
"Your Honor," Mara began smoothly, "what you are looking at is a real-time digital mirror of Helix’s main server logs from November 14th—the night before the server wipe."
On the wall-mounted screen, lines of code began to unfold. Red indicators highlighted altered authorization codes.
"As you can see," Mara pointed out, "the administrative override that initiated the system purge did not originate from Daniel Pierce’s workstation in Seattle. It was executed from an IP address inside Owen Mercer’s private residence in Bellevue."
Owen Mercer’s face turned from pale to ash gray.
"That's... that's a forged log!" Mercer stammered, standing up. "He manufactured that code while he was on the run!"
"Is that so?" Evelyn spoke up, her voice ringing clearly in the silent room. She reached into her bag and pulled out the physical engineering notebook. "This notebook was pulled from the cockpit of Daniel's plane. It contains the original cryptographic hardware signatures signed by your own chief quality auditor, who mysteriously died of a drug overdose three weeks ago. Check the timestamps, Judge."
Judge Vance gestured to the court's forensic IT analyst. "Verify those signatures immediately."
The room went completely silent for five agonizing minutes as the analyst ran the cryptographic verification algorithm. Finally, the analyst looked up at the judge.
"The signatures are authentic, Your Honor. They match the manufacturer's original hardware keys. They haven't been modified."

Judge Vance slowly turned her gaze toward Owen Mercer.
"Agent Miller," she said to the lead FBI officer standing by the door. "Place Mr. Mercer under immediate arrest for fraud, obstruction of justice, and federal perjury."
