Chapter 14 - The Storm Breaks

The arrest of Owen Mercer hit the national news cycle like an atomic bomb. By evening, headlines across the country read: HELIX AERONAUTICS COO ARRESTED IN MASSIVE CONSPIRACY; FORMER ENGINEER CLEARED OF ALL CHARGES.

As Mercer was led away in handcuffs in front of the live news crews, his defense collapsed like a house of cards. Within forty-eight hours, Helix’s former financial controller, terrified of facing twenty years in federal prison, offered full cooperation to the Department of Justice. He turned over secondary bank accounts showing millions of dollars funneled directly to Mercer’s offshore shell corporations.

The news cameras that had once hunted Daniel as a fugitive were now surrounding Mara Whitlow’s small law office in Willow Ridge, desperate for an interview. But Daniel and Evelyn were nowhere to be found. They had slipped out through the back alley hours ago, returning to the only place that felt real: the quiet cabin on the ridge.

Sitting on the porch step as the sun set over the snowy pines, Daniel held two hot mugs of coffee. He handed one to Evelyn, his fingers brushing against hers.

"It's over," he said softly. "The DOJ officially dropped all charges this afternoon. My record is clean."

Evelyn looked out at the vast, silent forest. "How does it feel?"

"Strange," Daniel admitted, taking a sip. "For six months, I thought my life was completely finished. I thought I would either spend thirty years in prison or end up buried in a shallow ditch." He looked at her, his eyes deep and emotional. "And then I fell out of the sky into your yard."

Evelyn smiled, a gentle, real smile that reached her eyes for the first time in five years. "You ruined my favorite blue mug when you crashed, Daniel."

May you like

"I'll buy you a hundred blue mugs," he laughed softly. "A thousand."

"I only need one," she whispered. "As long as you're here to share it."
