Chapter 20 - The Sound of the Wind

Years passed over Willow Ridge, soft and generous. The new research center down in the valley was completed, bringing good jobs, young families, and honest enterprise back to the small town. The memory of the corruption that once plagued the paper mill was replaced by children playing in the new memorial park by the river.

Up on the ridge, the cabin remained unchanged, except for a wide new stone porch that Daniel built with his own hands during their second summer together.

On a cool late November evening, exactly six years after the sky had split open, the woods beyond Willow Ridge went quiet once again. The wind moved gently through the tall stands of pine, carrying the crisp scent of coming winter snow.

Evelyn sat on the porch in her favorite rocking chair, a warm woolen blanket wrapped over her knees. In her hand, she held a brand-new blue ceramic mug filled with steaming tea. Beside her sat another rocking chair, where Daniel was leaning back, his hand resting comfortably over hers on the wooden armrest. He was reading a book, his face peaceful in the golden light of the lantern hanging from the porch roof.

"What are you thinking about?" Daniel asked softly, closing his book and looking over at her.

Evelyn looked out toward the clearing—toward the lush grass where wild deer were grazing peacefully under the moonlight, where a scorched plane had once lay broken in the dark. She took a slow, deep breath, feeling the cool mountain air fill her lungs without a single trace of fear or past grief.

"I was just thinking about explanations," Evelyn said with a quiet smile. "When people down in town ask me how we met, they always want a grand story with a simple explanation."

Daniel chuckled, leaning over to kiss her cheek. "And what do you tell them?"

Evelyn took a sip of her hot tea and turned her head to look into the warm, glowing windows of their home behind them.

"I tell them the truth," she said softly, her voice filled with enduring warmth. "I tell them the sky dropped you right into my yard. And it was the best thing that ever fell from heaven."
