Chapter 15 - Ghosts Laid to Rest

Spring arrived early in Willow Ridge that year. The heavy snow melted into roaring mountain streams, and green shoots broke through the dark soil around Evelyn's cabin.

With Daniel's name fully restored, the federal government issued a formal apology, along with a massive settlement from the liquidated assets of Helix Aeronautics. But Daniel had no interest in returning to Seattle or taking another executive corporate job. Instead, he used a portion of his settlement money to purchase the abandoned paper mill property down in the valley—the site where Tom had died and where they had fought off Mercer's men.

One bright April morning, Evelyn stood beside Daniel at the mill gates as heavy demolition equipment began pulling down the rusted iron walls that had haunted her memories for half a decade.

"What are you going to build here?" she asked, watching a rusted crane crumble into the dirt.

"A clean energy research center," Daniel said, turning to her. "A place where young engineers can build real technology without corporate corruption. And a community park dedicated to the workers who lost their lives here. Starting with Tom."

Evelyn felt a tear slip down her cheek, but for the first time, it wasn't a tear of grief or anger. It was peace. She reached out and wrapped her fingers around Daniel's, holding him tight as the old rusted structure was finally cleared away to make room for new life.

"He would have liked that," she whispered. "Tom always hated how ugly that building was."

"Then we'll make sure the new one is beautiful," Daniel promised, kissing her forehead.
