CHAPTER 15: THE MARCH OF THE IRON VANGUARD

Part 1: The Gathering Steel at the Coast
The Pacific waters crashing against the stone docks of Lima were black and cold, reflecting the towering, armored silhouettes of the Castile Empire's grand armada. Over fifty heavy, iron-plated galleons choked the harbor, their masts thick forests of wood and iron rigging. From the damp holds of these massive ships, the true strength of the Castile crown spilled onto the shores of the New World.
Thousands of heavy infantrymen—the Iron Vanguard—marched in flawless, rhythmic synchronization. Their steel plate armor was polished to a mirrored sheen, and they carried heavy, long halberds and runic wheel-lock arquebuses.
At the front of this massive, metallic army stood General Jose of the Castile Crown and the Twin Frost Warlocks—the Stag-Lord and the Heron-Sage.
"The desert is vast, and the heat of the Atacama has swallowed many of our men in the past, General," the Stag-Lord whispered, his voice like the grinding of glaciers. "The Sun Cult's red pyramid is shielded by a residual geothermic aura. Our steel-clad soldiers will boil in their armor if they march blindly."
General Jose sneered, resting his gloved hand on the pommel of his heavy broadsword. "The Governor-General has granted us unlimited resources for this crusade. We do not march blindly. We bring the winter with us."
The Heron-Sage smiled, raising his tall staff carved from the bone of a marsh-beast. He pointed it toward the giant crates being unloaded from the flagship. As the wooden crates shattered open, a blast of freezing, unnatural fog spilled across the stone docks.
From within the mists emerged dozens of Frost Behemoths—monstrous, eight-foot-tall golems constructed of dark, unmelting glacier ice, summoned from the deepest abysses of the far south. Their eyes glowed with an eerie, pale-blue light. They were designed to act as mobile engines of winter, radiating an absolute, freezing aura that would shield the marching soldiers from the blistering, dry heat of the desert.
Part 2: The Scorched March
The march began. The Iron Vanguard moved across the coastal hills, descending into the boundless, rust-red sand dunes of the Atacama Desert.
From a tactical perspective, the march was a terrifying display of imperial force. Wherever the army trod, the blistering, hundred-and-twenty-degree heat of the desert sand was instantly neutralized. The Frost Behemoths lumbered along the flanks of the army, their icy breaths creating a rolling, forty-foot dome of dense, freezing fog that enveloped the entire marching column.

The red sand beneath the soldiers' heavy iron boots froze solid, cracking like glass as they stepped. The indigenous desert fauna—locusts and sand-lizards—were frozen in mid-scuttle, preserved as tiny, icy statues in the wake of the iron column.
"This is an abomination," one of the local native mercenaries whispering in Spanish to his companion as they marched in the rear. "They are freezing the desert itself."
"Silence, heretic!" an armored Castile captain barked, backhanding the mercenary with his iron gauntlet. "The winter of the Crown is the only law. March!"
For three days, the brutal, frozen machine of the Castile Vanguard cut through the heart of the Atacama. They left a trail of frozen, white sand stretching across the red dunes like a scar. Any scout from the Sun Cult who attempted to spy on the column was hunted down by the Twin Warlocks' elite frost-trackers, their bodies left frozen to death under the blistering mid-day sun.
Part 3: The Breath of the Frost Warlocks
On the fourth evening of the march, the iron column entered the towering red-sandstone canyons that bordered the sacred territory of the Sun Cult. The cliffs rose hundreds of feet into the air, casting long, dark shadows across the frozen vanguard below.
The Stag-Lord halted his mount. He closed his pale, glowing eyes, breathing in the dry canyon air.
"I feel him," the Stag-Lord whispered, a cruel, cold smile twisting his withered face. "Kaelen... the boy's solar core is growing. The ember we left in his chest has not killed him. It has been fed."
"It matters not," the Heron-Sage sneered, tapping his bone staff against the canyon walls.
The stone instantly turned pale grey, covered in a thick layer of frosty rime.
"The boy's solar energy is but a drop of water compared to the winter we carry," the Heron-Sage continued. "When we reach the step-pyramid, we will freeze their sacred flame, and we will drag the boy back to Lima in chains. General Jose, order the vanguard to double their pace. The Sun Cult is just beyond these cliffs."
General Jose raised his sword, his voice echoing through the frozen canyon:

"Soldiers of Castile! Double the march! Tomorrow, we burn their red temple in the name of the Crown, and we freeze the heretics of the Sun!"
With a unified, terrifying shout that shook loose pebbles from the canyon walls, the Iron Vanguard marched forward. The Frost Behemoths let out low, rumbling roars of ice, their freezing breath preparing to extinguish the sacred fires of the Atacama.
