Chapter 12 - The Police Report and the Arrest Warrant at Dawn

The emergency alarms shrieked through the empty corridors of Morgan Events Group as I stepped out of my office, holding the heavy brass letter opener like a dagger. Sonia flanked my right side, her phone already dialing direct emergency dispatch.

'Ethan!' I called out, my voice cutting cleanly through the screeching siren alarms. 'You're breaking into your own former office at midnight with a crowbar? That’s a desperate look, even for you.'

Ethan spun around, dropping the iron crowbar with a deafening clatter against the polished marble floor. His hoodie slipped back, revealing a face pale, sweaty, and twisted in absolute, frenzied panic. Beside him, his masked accomplice yanked off his hood, revealing Marcus Vance, breathing heavily with a duffel bag stuffed with external hard drives.

'Clara,' Ethan snarled, taking a threatening step forward before stopping as two armed security guards rounded the corner from the elevator bay, their batons drawn and flashlights blindingly bright in his eyes.

'Don't move!' the lead security guard bellowed, stepping forward. 'Hands behind your head, or you'll regret it!'

Marcus cursed loudly, trying to bolt toward the emergency stairwell, but Sonia’s quick reflexes took over. She lunged forward, tripping his ankle with a clean, precise sweep that sent Marcus crashing hard into a decorative marble planter, shattering ceramic pots across the floor.

Ethan stood frozen between the security guards and us, his chest heaving, realizing for the absolute, undeniable second time that his entire criminal enterprise had completely evaporated.

'You’re too late, Clara,' Ethan hissed, his voice trembling with venom as the guards pinned his arms behind his back and shoved him against the wall. 'Richard Sterling already filed the trust addendum with the state civil registry. By morning, Morgan Events Group legally belongs to me, whether you have your little hard drives or not.'

I walked slowly toward him, stopping two feet away. I pulled Arthur Pendelton’s flash drive and Arthur Sterling’s unedited digital ledger from my trench coat pocket, holding them up so the red emergency lights glinted off the metal casing.

'Richard filed a forgery, Ethan,' I said softly, my voice cold as ice. 'And the U.S. Attorney General’s office doesn't care about civil registries when federal grand larceny and elder extortion charges are attached to the docket.'

Ethan’s face drained of every remaining drop of color. His bravado shattered instantly, replaced by a pathetic, cowering terror. 'Clara... please. We were married for twelve years. Don't do this. We can settle this privately—just you and me.'

'Twelve years,' I repeated, letting out a sharp, humorless laugh. 'You spent twelve years plotting how to bleed my family dry while sleeping with my younger sister in parking garage corners. The only place you'll be settling anything from now on is a maximum-security federal holding cell.'

Ten minutes later, local police sirens wailed outside the ground-floor lobby. Federal marshals accompanied by city precinct officers marched up the grand staircase in heavy rain gear, slapping steel handcuffs onto Ethan and Marcus simultaneously.

As Ethan was dragged past me toward the elevators, his head hung low in total defeat, he cast one last, pathetic glance in my direction. I didn't blink. I didn't flinch. I simply watched the elevator doors close, sealing him out of my life forever.

By 6:00 AM, the formal arrest warrants were signed by federal judge Harrison. By 8:00 AM, the emergency motion filed by Richard Sterling was officially thrown out of court with prejudice, citing fraudulent documentation and criminal conspiracy.

I sat at my executive desk as the morning sun finally broke through the storm clouds, illuminating the gleaming skyline outside my window. Sonia walked in carrying a steaming cup of coffee and placing the morning financial gazette on my desk.

The front-page headline screamed in bold black ink: *'Morgan Events Group Execs Arrested in Multi-Million Dollar Corporate Sabotage and Extortion Ring.'*

I picked up my coffee, took a slow sip, and smiled. The war was over. And we had won every single inch.
