Chapter 15 - The Father’s Confession and the Dark Family Secret

Following the explosive testimony of the notary public, the trial recessed for a mandatory two-hour lunch break. While the media swarmed the courthouse steps outside, my father and I retreated to a quiet, private conference room reserved for senior executives on the third floor.
My father poured two cups of black coffee from the silver carafe on the sideboard, handing me one before sinking heavily into a leather armchair. He looked exhausted, the stress of the past month etching deep lines around his eyes.
'You held up remarkably well during Arthur’s testimony, Dad,' I said softly, sipping the hot coffee.
My father stared down into his cup, his hands trembling slightly against the ceramic. 'I should have seen it coming, Clara. Ethan didn't just manipulate Madison and forge my signature on the trust addendum. He... he knew about our family’s past before he ever married you.'
I frowned, setting my cup down on the table. 'What do you mean, Dad? What past?'
My father let out a long, shuddering sigh, rubbing his temples as if trying to physically erase a painful memory. 'Before your grandmother founded Morgan Events Group, our family lost everything in a hostile corporate buyout orchestrated by Ethan’s uncle back in the nineties. Your grandfather died of a stress-induced heart attack because of that bankruptcy.'
I stared at my father in stunned silence, the air suddenly feeling thin in the room. 'Ethan’s uncle? You never told me this.'
'I wanted to protect you,' my father murmured, looking up at me with profound sorrow in his eyes. 'When Ethan applied for the junior analyst position at Morgan Events Group twelve years ago, he used his mother’s maiden name. We didn't find out his true lineage until after you two were already married.'
'And by then, he had already wormed his way into the executive board and the family trust,' I whispered, the final pieces of the horrifying puzzle snapping into place with chilling clarity.
'It wasn't just an affair with Madison, and it wasn't just corporate greed,' my father said, his voice breaking slightly. 'It was a generational vendetta. Ethan came into our lives with one single mission: to finish what his uncle started and destroy Morgan Events Group from the inside out.'
A cold shiver ran down my spine. The betrayal wasn't just personal; it was an act of calculated economic warfare spanning decades. But as I looked at my father, I felt no fear—only a burning, unbreakable surge of adrenaline.
'Well, Dad,' I said, standing up and smoothing down my blazer with absolute composure. 'Ethan picked the wrong family to wage war against. His uncle lost thirty years ago, and Ethan is about to spend the next thirty years behind bars.'

My father looked up, a slow, proud smile breaking across his weathered face. For the first time in weeks, the heavy burden seemed to lift from his shoulders.
'You truly are your grandmother’s granddaughter, Clara,' he said softly, standing up to button his jacket. 'Now, let's go back into that courtroom and finish them.'
