Chapter 5 - Madison’s Desperate Gamble and the Fake Pregnancy Trap

The courtroom fell into an absolute, breathless silence. Judge Harrison gestured for the court bailiff to take the flash drive and documents from my hand, inserting the drive into the judicial terminal on his desk. For three agonizing minutes, the only sound in the room was the low hum of the air conditioning and the rhythmic tapping of the judge’s pen against the mahogany bench.
Ethan was sweating profusely now, his collar suddenly looking three sizes too small. He leaned over toward Sterling, whispering frantically, but his attorney merely shook his head, looking horrified as he realized he had been dragged into a criminal fraud scheme.
Up on the bench, Judge Harrison clicked off the video file. He looked up, his expression cold enough to freeze boiling water. He didn't look at Ethan; he looked straight at Sterling. 'Counsel, did your clients inform you that the notary public who stamped these assignment deeds has already confessed on video to taking a ten-thousand-dollar bribe and falsifying dates?'
Sterling’s jaw dropped. He whipped his head around to glare at Ethan. 'Did you lie to me?'
'It’s a frame-up!' Ethan blurted out, standing up abruptly and pointing a shaking finger at me. 'Your Honor, she’s fabricating evidence! She hacked our systems, she’s weaponizing her family's wealth, and she’s trying to destroy me because our marriage fell apart!'
'Sit down, Mr. Vance, before I hold you in direct contempt of court,' Judge Harrison warned, his voice cracking like a whip. 'Motion for emergency injunction denied. Furthermore, I am referring these files to the State Attorney General’s Office for immediate criminal investigation into corporate fraud and perjury.'
Gasps echoed through the gallery. Ethan collapsed back into his chair, his face entirely drained of color, his hands trembling uncontrollably. Across the aisle, Madison stood up so fast her chair screeched against the floor, her designer sunglasses sliding down her nose.
'Wait! Your Honor, please!' Madison shrieked, rushing down the aisle toward the well of the court, tears streaming down her face with terrifying theatricality. 'You can't do this! You don't understand the circumstances! I... I am pregnant!'
The entire courtroom went dead silent. Even Judge Harrison paused, staring down at Madison over his glasses. Ethan whipped his head around, his eyes wide with utter shock, looking from Madison to the judge.
Madison dropped dramatically to her knees right beside the plaintiff's table, sobbing hysterically and clutching her stomach. 'I'm carrying Ethan's child! We were trying to protect our future family from her corporate tyranny! She’s trying to ruin her own flesh and blood out of spite and jealousy!'
I stood frozen for a fraction of a second, staring at my younger sister. I had known Madison was manipulative, selfish, and ruthless, but faking a pregnancy in the middle of a federal fraud hearing was a level of psychotic desperation I hadn't anticipated.
Ethan recovered quickly, his predatory survival instincts kicking back in. He knelt beside Madison, wrapping his arm around her shoulders and glaring up at the bench with righteous fury. 'Yes! That’s right, Your Honor! My wife—my fiancé—is expecting our child. We were trying to secure our family’s financial independence away from a hostile, controlling monopoly!'
Judge Harrison rubbed his temples, looking thoroughly exhausted by the daytime-soap-opera twist playing out in his federal courtroom. 'Ms. Morgan,' the judge said, looking directly at me. 'Does the plaintiff's medical claim alter your corporate filings?'
I walked slowly toward the center of the well, stopping three feet away from Madison, who was still sobbing into Ethan's shoulder. I looked down at her, my voice cutting through the courtroom like a razor blade.
'It’s a brilliant performance, Madison,' I said smoothly. 'Truly Academy Award-worthy. Too bad you forgot to check your own medical records before you staged the waterworks.'
Madison’s sobbing hitched for a fraction of a second—a microsecond tell that didn't escape my notice. 'What... what are you talking about?' she choked out, wiping a theatrical tear from her cheek.
I pulled a medical receipt from my folder and held it up for the court. 'Last week, while managing corporate wellness benefits and insurance audits, I noticed a prescription claim filed under your employee health profile at the downtown women's clinic. A prescription for a post-surgical hormone blocker following an outpatient procedure on August tenth. Shall I subpoena Dr. Elizabeth Sterling to testify under oath whether you are physically capable of carrying a child right now?'
The color drained completely from Madison’s face. The fake tears dried up instantly, replaced by a mask of sheer, murderous hatred. She scrambled to her feet, abandoning the kneeling act entirely, and pointed a shaking finger at me. 'You psychotic bitch! You’re invading my medical privacy!'
'Court is adjourned,' Judge Harrison banged his gavel with a force that rattled the microphones. 'Mr. Vance, Ms. Morgan, I suggest you retain criminal defense counsel immediately. You are both barred from entering Morgan Events Group properties effective immediately. Bailiff, escort them out.'

As the bailiffs moved in to escort Ethan and a screaming, thrashing Madison out of the courtroom, Ethan cast one last, venomous look over his shoulder at me. His lips formed three silent words: *This isn't over.*
'No, Ethan,' I whispered to myself as I packed my briefcase. 'It’s only just begun.'
