Chapter 8 - Ethan’s Secret Meeting and the Blackmail Package

At 2:00 AM, the geolocation tracker embedded in my father’s bearer bonds pinged for the first time. The signal wasn't coming from an airport or a highway toll booth. It was originating from an abandoned industrial warehouse district down by the harbor—an old shipping depot owned by Apex Horizon LLC.
I sat in the passenger seat of my father’s unmarked corporate SUV as we crept down the unlit gravel road, our headlights off, relying on military-grade night-vision binoculars to scan the perimeter. Three vehicles were parked outside the corrugated metal loading bay: Ethan’s black SUV, Madison’s white sedan, and a sleek foreign sports car belonging to Marcus Vance.
'They’re meeting with Marcus to divide the spoils before fleeing the country,' I whispered, adjusting the focus on the binoculars. 'And probably trying to figure out how to cash those bearer bonds without triggering federal alarms.'
My father gripped the steering wheel, his knuckles white. 'Let’s wait for our private security detail to arrive before we make a move. We don’t know what kind of weapons they might have.'
'We have enough evidence to put them away for twenty years, Dad,' I replied, keeping my eyes glued to the warehouse loading door. 'I just want to see the look on Ethan's face when he walked right into another trap.'
Inside the warehouse, through the high, grimy windows, we could see shadows moving under harsh fluorescent lights. Ethan was pacing back and forth, gesturing wildly with his hands, while Marcus sat coolly on a wooden crate, smoking a cigarette and examining a thick manila folder.
Madison was standing near a folding table, tossing handfuls of shredded paper into a metal burn barrel. The orange flames flickered against the damp concrete walls, casting long, grotesque shadows across the cavernous room.
'They’re burning the physical ledger records,' I muttered, reaching for my phone to check our security team's ETA. *Five minutes out.*
'We don't need to wait for security,' my father said suddenly, putting the SUV in park and reaching for the door handle. 'Look at the front gate.'
A pair of unmarked local police cruisers turned down the access road, their emergency lights flashing silently without sirens, blocking the only exit from the warehouse compound. Sonia had anticipated our move and called in a favor with the precinct captain.
Before Ethan or Marcus could realize they were boxed in, my father and I stepped out of the SUV, walking briskly across the gravel toward the corrugated metal loading door just as our private security team fanned out around the perimeter.
I pushed the heavy metal door open with a resounding clang that echoed off the high rafters. The three figures inside froze instantly.
Ethan spun around, dropping a stack of bearer bonds onto the folding table. His face twisted in sheer panic when he saw us standing in the doorway, flanked by local police officers and armed security guards.
'Clara,' Ethan gasped, stumbling backward against a stack of wooden shipping crates. 'What... how did you find us?'
'Did you really think my grandmother’s bearer bonds didn't have GPS trackers embedded in the paper stock, Ethan?' I asked, walking slowly toward the center of the warehouse, my heels clicking sharply against the concrete floor.
Marcus stood up slowly, stubbing out his cigarette on the floor. He flashed a cold, arrogant smirk that looked terrifyingly like his brother's. 'Well, well. If it isn't the scorned wife playing corporate detective. You might have locked our bank accounts, Clara, but you're too late to stop the real transfer.'
'What transfer, Marcus?' I asked, stopping ten feet away from them.
Marcus picked up the manila folder from the crate and tapped it against his palm. 'The transfer of your entire enterprise client database to our overseas servers. The moment we hit send on this encrypted drive, Morgan Events Group loses every single major contract in its portfolio. You'll own an empty shell company worth less than the paper it's printed on.'
Madison let out a shrill, hysterical laugh, stepping out from behind the burn barrel. 'That’s right, big sister! You can throw us in jail, but you’ll be running a bankrupt corporation from a prison cell!'
I didn't blink. I didn't flinch. I simply pulled my phone from my blazer pocket, unlocked the screen, and pressed play on a recorded phone call.
Arthur Pendelton’s voice echoed clearly through the cavernous warehouse: *'Mr. Vance paid me ten thousand dollars to notarize the forged patent assignments and backdate the offshore wire transfer ledgers...'*
Marcus’s smirk vanished instantly. Ethan’s jaw dropped. Madison stopped laughing, her eyes darting frantically toward the door where local police officers were now stepping inside with handcuffs raised.

'That call was recorded two hours ago,' I said smoothly, sliding my phone back into my pocket. 'Along with Arthur’s full confession implicating Marcus, Ethan, and Madison in a criminal conspiracy to commit corporate espionage and grand larceny.'
Ethan lunged forward with a roar of pure, unadulterated rage, grabbing the manila folder from the crate and screaming, 'I'll burn it all before you ever touch it!'—only for my father to intercept him with a lightning-fast tackle that sent Ethan crashing hard into the gravel floor.
