Chapter 13 - Returning to Pine Ridge Lake

Three weeks after the hearing, the legal title of the Pine Ridge Lake Estate was officially restored to my sole possession under an unbreakable generational trust amendment filed by Naomi Price. The local police had removed the crime scene tape, and the insurance payout for the property damage incurred during the chaotic housewarming party had already been deposited into the trust’s accounts.

I drove my car down the familiar winding gravel driveway beneath the towering canopy of pine trees, my tires crunching softly against the stones. The lake house sat bathed in the warm, golden light of the late afternoon sun, looking just as majestic and serene as it had when my grandfather Walter used to sit on the porch telling me stories about the history of the land.

I parked my car, stepped out, and walked up the wooden steps of the wraparound porch. My left wrist was finally out of the heavy plaster cast, replaced by a lightweight removable brace. I unlocked the front door with my brass key—the real key, the one Diane and Evan had tried so desperately to steal through violence and betrayal.

The interior smelled of old cedar, polished hardwood, and faint memories of a childhood unburdened by malice. I walked through the spacious living room, trailing my fingers along the stone fireplace where Diane had stood drinking champagne just weeks before. Every shadow of fear that had once haunted these walls had been thoroughly washed away, replaced by an overwhelming sense of profound, hard-won peace.

I walked out onto the back deck overlooking the tranquil expanse of the lake. The water mirrored the brilliant amber and crimson hues of the autumn foliage on the opposite shore. A solitary blue heron glided gracefully across the surface before disappearing into the mist.

My phone buzzed in my coat pocket. I pulled it out. It was a text message from Naomi Price: *‘The final corporate dissolution papers for Evan’s restaurant group have been approved by the Secretary of State. The assets have been liquidated into the trust foundation. You are officially free, Claire.’*

I stared at the screen for a long moment, a slow, radiant smile spreading across my face. I typed back a simple reply: *‘Let’s start the foundation.’*
