Six months later, the grand ballroom of the historic downtown hotel was filled to capacity with civic leaders, legal dignitaries, prominent philanthropists, and survivors of domestic financial abuse. Standing at the mahogany podium beneath a warm spotlight, I adjusted the microphone and looked out across the sea of attentive faces.
“Three years ago, I believed that love meant compromise, that loyalty meant enduring cruelty, and that family was defined by who you shared a roof with,” I began, my voice clear, steady, and resonant throughout the hall. “I learned the hard way that some people don’t enter your life to build a future—they enter your life to dismantle yours brick by brick.”
Applause rippled softly through the audience. I paused, looking down at my notes before meeting the eyes of Naomi Price and Tasha Greene sitting in the front row.
“Today, we officially launch the Walter Bennett Foundation for Survivor Advocacy and Financial Independence,” I continued, a confident smile touching my lips. “A sanctuary, a legal defense fund, and a resource network dedicated to ensuring that no woman or man ever has to choose between their safety and their survival because a predator thought they could hide behind legal loopholes and closed doors.”
