Chapter 5 - Midnight Knock at the Lake House

Midnight at Pine Ridge Lake was usually defined by the gentle lapping of water against the wooden dock and the distant hoot of owls in the pine canopy. Tonight, however, the silence was shattered by the harsh, blinding glare of flashing red and blue lights reflecting off the dark surface of the water.

Inside the house, the music was still thumping, bass vibrating through the floorboards. But the atmosphere shifted instantly when three heavy cruisers pulled onto the gravel driveway, tires crunching loudly. Uniformed deputies poured out of the vehicles, led by Lieutenant Marcus Vance, a towering, no-nonsense veteran of the county sheriff’s department whom my grandfather had known for thirty years.

On my live monitor, I watched the front door swing open. Evan stepped out onto the porch, a drink in his hand, looking annoyed rather than alarmed.

“Hey! Keep it down out there, we’re having a private event,” Evan called out, holding up a hand against the flashing lights.

Lieutenant Vance walked up the wooden steps, his boots heavy and deliberate. He didn’t smile. He didn’t offer pleasantries. Instead, he pulled a thick packet of official documents from his tactical vest.

“Evan Mercer?” Lieutenant Vance asked, his voice carrying clearly through the intercom microphone.

“Yes? What is the meaning of this?” Evan scoffed, taking a sip of his drink. “Do you know who my investors are? I’ll have your badge by morning.”

Vance didn’t flinch. He simply opened the folder and read aloud. “Evan Mercer, by order of the Fourth Judicial District Court and pursuant to the enforcement of the Walter Bennett Property Trust Master Covenants, you are hereby served with an immediate Writ of Possession, Order of Restitution, and Asset Freezing Injunction. You, along with all unauthorized occupants, are ordered to vacate these premises within fifteen minutes.”

The music inside the house cut off abruptly. Silence fell over the living room. Faces pressed against the glass windows and screen doors, staring in absolute shock.

Evan’s face drained of color, his drink slipping from his fingers to shatter on the porch boards. “This is a mistake! My wife—Claire—we’re going through a divorce! This house is part of the marital estate!”

“Your wife has nothing to do with this anymore,” Vance said coldly, snapping handcuffs onto Evan’s wrists before Evan could process what was happening. “Furthermore, we have an active felony arrest warrant for Diane Mercer for aggravated assault and attempted manslaughter stemming from the incident on these stairs two weeks ago.”

Chaos erupted inside the house. Through the camera feed, I watched guests scrambling for their coats, pushing past one another in a frantic panic to escape a sinking ship. Diane appeared at the doorway, her emerald dress catching the flashing red lights, her face contorted in pure, unadulterated terror as two deputies stepped forward to place her in stainless steel bracelets.
