Chapter 15 - Whispers in the Dark

Late that evening, after the gala had concluded and the banquet hall had grown quiet, I returned to the lake house. The night was pitch black, save for the bright dusting of stars scattered across the vast expanse of the night sky and the gentle glow of the porch light reflecting off the dark water of Pine Ridge Lake.

I unlocked the front door, stepped inside, and tossed my keys onto the mahogany entry table. The house was blissfully silent. I walked into the kitchen, poured myself a glass of ice water, and stepped out onto the back deck, leaning against the wooden railing to breathe in the crisp, pine-scented night air.

My phone buzzed on the patio table—a silent notification from an encrypted email client. I picked it up and tapped the screen. An unfamiliar email address had sent a single message with no subject line.

I opened it. Inside was a scanned document bearing a prison transfer seal from the Federal Correctional Institution in Terre Haute, Indiana, alongside a short, chilling note typed in plain text: *‘Evan Mercer was transferred to maximum security following an incident in the prison yard today. He keeps asking for you. He says he knows something about your grandfather’s past that you haven’t heard yet.’*

I stared at the screen, my breath catching slightly in the throat. For a fraction of a second, a cold shiver ran down my spine. Did Evan really know something else? Or was this just another desperate, pathetic attempt by a broken man to reach out from the abyss and claw his way back into my mind?

Before I could reply or close the message, my phone rang. Caller ID showed a restricted, private number.

I stared at the glowing screen as the phone vibrated against my palm in the quiet stillness of the lake night. The wind rustled through the pine branches overhead, whispering secrets across the dark water.

I pressed accept, brought the phone slowly to my ear, and whispered into the receiver.

“Talk to me.”
