Chapter 10 - Bloodline and Deception

The revelation hung in the air of the terrace like a heavy, suffocating smog.
"A brother?" Nathan repeated, the words feeling utterly foreign on his tongue. "I have a brother?"
Eleanor sank back onto the stone bench, her frame trembling as the dark, painful memories of her early marriage came flooding back. "Two years before you were born, Nathan... I gave birth to a boy. We named him Alexander Arthur Mercer. He was a sweet, bright child."
"Why did I never know about him?" Nathan asked, sitting beside her, his mind reeling. "There were no photos, no records, no mention of him in any family history!"
"Because Arthur took him from me," Eleanor sobbed, clutching Nathan’s hand. "When Alexander was three years old, Arthur discovered that the boy had severe respiratory complications. Arthur was an obsessed, narcissistic man who demanded absolute physical perfection in his heirs. He saw Alexander's weakness as a stain on the Mercer bloodline. One night, after a terrible argument, Arthur told me the boy had died during an emergency surgery in Atlanta."
Nathan felt a wave of profound nausea wash over him. "He lied to you? He didn't die?"
"I believed him," Eleanor wept. "I mourned my sweet boy for years. Arthur erased every birth record, burned every photograph, and forbade anyone in the house from ever speaking Alexander's name. Two years later, you were born, Nathan. Healthy, strong, perfect in Arthur's eyes. I swore I would protect you with my life."
"Where did Arthur take him?" Nathan demanded, looking at Marcus.
Marcus scrolled through the FBI intelligence dossier on his tablet. "According to Swiss bank records and emergency court filings retrieved by Agent Vance an hour ago, Arthur didn't kill Alexander. He secretly sent him to a private boarding facility in Switzerland, keeping him hidden under an assumed name—Alexander Vance. Arthur funded a massive trust for him, keeping him completely isolated from the family empire, but training him remotely through private tutors to be an off-grid corporate operative."
"My God," Nathan muttered, rubbing his temples. "Arthur raised him in the shadows as a backup plan."
"Not just a backup plan, sir," Marcus warned, his voice grim. "Alexander Mercer was named as the sole beneficiary of Arthur's private offshore accounts—accounts worth over eight hundred million dollars that were kept completely separate from Mercer Enterprises."
"And now Alexander is back," Nathan realized, his eyes narrowing. "He thinks my mother and I stole his birthright."
"He doesn't just think that, Mr. Mercer," Marcus said, pulling up a secondary report. "Alexander arrived in Charlotte three hours ago on a private flight from Geneva. He has already filed an emergency injunction in federal court to freeze all Mercer Enterprises assets, claiming that Eleanor’s revival is a fraudulent scheme to deprive him of his rightful inheritance."
Nathan stood up, his jaw set, his shock turning into a cold, protective rage. "He spent his whole life being manipulated by Arthur, just like I was. But if he thinks he can come here and threaten my mother, he's mistaken."
"Nathan, please," Eleanor begged, reaching for his wrist. "Alexander is a victim of your father's cruelty too! He was robbed of his mother, his family, and his life! Don't fight him—let me talk to him. Let me tell him the truth!"
"He's not listening to reason, Mom," Nathan said gently, kissing her forehead. "He just cleared out eight hundred million dollars in Zurich and hired a team of high-powered corporate lawyers. He's coming for Blackridge."
At that exact moment, the heavy wrought-iron security gates at the bottom of the estate driveway chimed over the house intercom.
Marcus checked the live security feed on his phone. A sleek grey sports car and two black sedans had pulled up to the gates.
Standing beside the lead vehicle, looking up at the security cameras with a cold, hollow expression, was Alexander Mercer.
Nathan looked at his mother, then at Marcus. "Open the gates."

"Mr. Mercer, are you sure?" Marcus asked cautiously. "We don't know what he's capable of."
"He's my brother," Nathan replied, stepping toward the terrace steps. "And it's time this family stopped hiding in the shadows."
